Looks like it could/should be titled the L. Ron Hubbard story

Just saw this yesterday. Phoenix and Hoffman were fantastic, as expected. But the movie was hot garbage - worst movie I've seen this year.

Yeah, this movie has been the subject of much debate on this board. Mostly, people who have seen it have called it garbage, people who have not seen it and are big PTA fans have derided the naysayers. I think the board's overall impression of the movie is the same as yours. I certainly thought it was not worth the hype, despite the acting.

I've seen it and thought it was great. I'm not a huge PTA fan either.

Fair enough. I'm sure there will be others like you who thought it was a very fine piece of filmmaking. I thought it lacked entirely in story and plot development. Most of the people on here have said that the acting was phenomenal but the movie was not that good.

This. I felt a little insulted after the movie was over - it just felt so pretentious that they could expect great acting and no story to turn into some award-winning film. The story wasn't developed in the least, and little bits of a story that did seem interesting were simply dismissed or not explained at all. It was just cheap movie making.

I'll never be able to support an award for Joaquin or PSH in this just b/c of how bad the story was though.

I actually flat told one of my friends that it felt like PTA was laughing at the audience the entire film. Like he was thinking to himself: "I can schlep these sheep a terrible film by calling it 'deep' and because of my past successes they will eat it up." I actually wonder if he didn't do this on purpose to parallel the Master's beliefs - all shiny exterior with no meat. But I may be giving PTA too much credit with that analysis.

SPOILERS (?)

As a for instance, the Master's daughter starts rubbing Freddy's inner thigh while the Master is preaching and her husband is only about 10 feet away. Then NOTHING HAPPENS with that. She says later, "I think he wants me," but what the hell point is there to her touching his crotch? Jack shite. There is no point. One of the most frustrating movies I've seen in a long time.

Watched it last night.

I still dont know what I think of the movie, but Phoenix was nothing short of brilliant. He was terrifying.

Watched it recently and enjoyed it. I like weird movies, though.
