| Damn it!, The PIXIES (Posted on 9/28/12 at 10:46 pm)
As I drift off in my possibly 1989's Greatest Album of the Year anaesthesia, which is Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptian's Queen Elvis (yeah I know, Stone Roses, Doolittle, and I think JAMC's Head On were from this year, but this is a GREAT album), Boston Dawg reminded me of the importance of this band (The Pixies). Seminal. Check Tight. Check, check, check Strong musicians. Check, check, check Music. Check to infinity Lyrics. Check to infinity Before we get off into metal heads screaming about UMass and shite like that, let's admit, this band does not get it's due. They are up there for GOAT. They are not simply a directional band. Do y'all know who they were? What chaos they caused? The fawning and gushing which came from all established musicians? Tell me, where do you rate the Pixies, and why?

Like them a lot. I'd be lying if I claimed I knew their library, but am familiar with a few of their albums and appreciate their style and sound. UMass Dig for Fire Gigantic are probably my favorite tracks.

Definitely underrepresented for how awesome they are... I put them up there as one of my several GOAT's

I was there back then. I agree that queen elvis was awesome. The pixies back then were considered very good. But they were not, and still aren't, in the league of sonic youth.

all opinions are valid, and if you're referring to staying power, you may have a point. If you're referring to how prolific both bands were, well, Sonic Youth, needed quadruple the time to produce a catalogue which is still inferior. Don't get me wrong, I like Sonic Youth, alot, but IMHO, there is no comparison.

One of the all-time great bands. Breeders and Kelley Deal 6000 were even good, which really shows how great (the) Pixies were.

Like you say, we don't agree. But Daydream Nation is one of the greatest albums of all time. Pixies never did anything that approaches that. And I like the pixies.....well....surfa rosa.....other than that........naw.

I'd put Surfer Rosa / Come On Pilgrim against Daydream Nation quite confidently. Doolittle, and if hard pressed, the album with Velouria as well (was it called Velouria, or what the hell was it called?). I understand that Doolittle may have been too polished for some people's taste, but it is the quintessential album. I can list 20+ Sonic Youth songs which I absolutely love, sadly, there aren't more than three which pertain to one album (sorry, there is that one double album, isn't there?). Again, that's me.

Zappas, I am soooo pleasantly amazed to see someone appreciates Queen Elvis. Hitchcock was as eccentric as they come, and a tough interview for the US, and his musical production fluctuated in genre and style tremendously, but for me, that album was an absolute alignment of the stars. It's still good, and I think I'd be upset to hear it remastered/remixed to today's standards.

They are the gateway band to get people into music which was "left of the dial" back in the day. Their songs were hooky enough to draw in your pop music fans, loud enough for the metalheads, and chaotic enough for punkers. Great damn band and Surfer Rosa is one of the best albums ever recorded. I leaned more towards "pure" punk rock acts like the Minutemen or Fugazi, but the Pixies were the band that bridged the gap from the underground to the mainstream.

They are in my top 5 of all time. They certainly get their "due" from other musicians. Here is a great documentary done on The Pixies about 10 years ago. It's very interesting, it's about an hour. LINK

They are a huge influence on other amazing artist. That is usually a strong indicator of significance.

they came and went with barely a wimper... sad but true... Replacements were a much bigger band, historically and musically...

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Sonic Youth is a band who I like intellectually, but actually hate all of their output. I even own four of their albums and spent most of my youth pretending I liked them. I don't. I find their music to be borderline unlistenable. Hugely influential, and I really do appreciate their role in the rise of independent music, but man... I really do not enjoy them at all. I love the idea of Sonic Youth, not Sonic Youth.

Wow. Just wow. I take it you're 25, 26 years old, max. If older, you're probably from Minnesota, or Midwestern.
