Hike was 10.2 miles round trip, 8 of it on the PCT, and 3200 feet of elevation gain. Had some clouds so it wasn't the perfect weather we had the day before climbing Thielsen. No rain though so it was all good.

Diamond Peak and Crescent lake from our camp.

Here's an old PCT blaze.

PCT and our climbers trail to the left.

Summit lake, we started there.

The Peak had 3 false summits which is always disheartening when you think you're almost there.

Summit. Crescent lake on the left, Summit lake on the right.

You've inspired me... I think I'm going to summit the Indian Mounds this weekend!

Thanks, but you might want to save the damning until you see this upcoming weekends pics. Gonna be awesome, weather is looking pretty clear too. Washington is a crumbly rotten mountain so our hearts will get a chance to pump hard in a few places as we try to safely gain the summit.

Can't wait for the 65 foot rappel off the summit .

Rainier conditioning question for you regarding training for the weight of a back pack on climb. I'm thinking about buying a weight vest that can range from 10-60 pounds and increasing the weight as I build up endurance. Will this work, or should I buy a backpack and throw a 40 pound sack of dog food in it?

If the weight vest will work; I'd probably go that route and just rent a backpack from the guide service. I'd hate to buy a quality one just in case this is a one time deal, but I also recognize that it won't feel the same as an actual back pack. Your thoughts?

I've never used one but or even heard of one but I bet that would work. You're still carrying weight around.

Doesn't seem like you could wrong with it. A quality pack is going to start at 150$ and go up. If you go that route (vest) I'd wear it and walk up some bleachers, briskly and do it a lot. You don't have any real elevation to use so that's probably your best bet. I'd also go for long walks wearing the weight, like 5 miles plus starting. I'd also run quite a bit as well, without the vest. Get your lungs in good shape as you can't prepare for elevation and loss of oxygen down there.

eta...I guess you should do what you can to save money because you will need to get a quality jacket, pants, gloves, layers etc.....or do they rent those too?

Yeah, the rent pretty much everthing but base layers. I didn't look too closely but I think it will run $300-$500ish to rent most of the outer clothing, crampons(sp?), Ice ax etc

Rental list

I will train appropriately. Altitude/thin air is biggest concern since I have asthma, but the challenge, adventure and learning new things( didn't know what a crampon was until 2 weeks ago) is why I do these things such as this so I will be ready.

Damn, they are making some money off rental gear. Most of what you'll need you won't have any choice but to rent from them but you might be able to save a few bucks by renting your axe, helmet, boots, crampons elsewhere. I'll help look.

Gonna be an awesome, challenging adventure. Just the approach to base camp will give you a clue as to how physically fit you are. Seeing all the cracks and crevasses will get your heart pumping as you maneuver around them. Gonna be the shite!

Thanks, but don't worry about it. Since I'm flying in, its easier to rent everything from one place. Plus, i'd like to get their opinion on fit since they will have to listen to my bitching if boots don't fit!

I'll have enough anxiety with out making trip any more complicated.

In another thread you mentioned purchasing St. Helen's permits in February. Do you have to pick an exact date to climb or is it usable on any day? Not sure how precise we will be on our planning that far out.

I should be in shape as this climb is scheduled 28 days after I re-do my 340 mile kayak race.....

Ok, seems logical considering it wouldn't save you a bundle.

Yes, the date is specific but permits don't usually sell out til June according to the site. People also cancel and want to sell their permits all the time. Another thing to consider would be climbing Mt. Adams. It's a little further of a drive but you could brag on bagging the two highest summits in the state. You would need mountaineering boots, crampons, axe, and a helmet but I know a place in Portland that is the cheapest around.

As the trip gets closer you can figure out if St. Helen's will work or not. I think it would. Just looked at the site where you can buy others and there are plenty available in the next two weeks. LINK. Don't think it'll be a problem tbh.

Eta....will it just be you on this trip?

Rented boots will always not be the best since so many different types of feet have molded them. You'll also be renting plastics which aren't the best. Huge tip.....strap your feet in duct tape, that'll help you from getting blisters.

No, a friend from new Orleans and I booked together. Neither of us have done a mountian before, but both like outdoor adventures. After years of no contact, We happened to meet up at the LSU /WV game last year on a rafting trip on the Upper Gauley river. Started chatting about doing something and I emailed him the rainier idea and he said he was I on the spot....

Ok...was just curious about how many possible permits. Keep in touch as time passes so I know what dates you're coming. So we can plan and get permits. Hell, I might even make it a club event.
