2005 Honda Foreman 500 - Need to replace the rear axle bearings located inside the Rear Drum Brake Backing Plate. From my experience on other quads, after the drum is off, and the 4 nuts removed from the axle flange, the backing plate should slide right off, but this thing is stuck like the bearing ID is welded to the axle.

Any tricks / tips to get this sucker off?

Make sure you didn't miss any bolts or anything.

Yes, removed the center castle nut - removed the hub - removed brake cover and the drum itself. Brake internals are removed, took 4 bolts off of the rear of the backing plate and disconnected the brake cables.

Backing plate has movement, but will only come forward about 1/2". The bearings are shot so there is movement, but the ID of the bearing will not budge.

I've tried a gear puller - scared to force it any more than I have for fear of cracking the backing plate (Cast Aluminum) Tried driving the bearing the opposite direction using a pipe / hammer to loosen it up, tried banging on the back of the backing plate with a hammer (rubber and regular). I havent got it to budge.

Part #24 is what Im stuck on - you can see that there is actually 2 bearings inside the backing plate, these are the ones i need to get out to replace.

All I know how to do is pull it hard enough to grenade the bearing or put some heat on it.

Afraid the backing palte will grenade before the bearing - $200 part.

I think heat is going to be my only option. Going to try that again tonight.

Just remember aluminum expands faster than steel. Gonna be a pita no matter how you do it. I guess id try heating the inner race first. Be ready for grease fire. Be carefull not to cut the shaft.

Its already a PITA.

I dont think there is any grease left in it - plenty of ATF/Acetone/liquid wrench though.

Im not worried abotu the expansion of the aluminum - I need that bearing to expand faster than the axle. Once I get it off the axle, I can get it out of the backing plate - the C clip is on the rear of the plate. Once off the axle, I can get to the clip to remove the bearings.

Put a torch on that SOB

Shouldn't be that hard to take off though on a bike that new though. You've got to be missing something.

That was my thought too, but I've been over it countless times and went by the Factory Service Manual. There isnt anything else to hold it on there.

Havent got it yet. Had to help get some stuff done at my Dads yesterday and didnt get a chance to mess with it last night.

What are my worries about destroying this backing plate with a bigger hammer? one part already chiiped off while usign the gear puller. Thats what makes me so scared to hit it harder than I have.

I got a new bottel for the torch last night, my plan is to try heating it up next.

I figured out how to slide the axle out from the side I was having trouble with rather than the opposite side like the Service manual says to do. Meant taking a little more apart than what I had planned, but the bearing came right of the axle once i could get to it from behind. The outer race was still stuck in the backing palte once i popped it out though. That took a little bit of work to get out, but it came. Everything is apart and I didnt break anything. Now just waiting on the replacement parts to come in.
