Problem with our Receiver corps
Posted by DByrd2 on 9/23/12 at 10:43 am00
The problem is that all of our starters at WR are seemingly built to be slot WRs. I said it on the Score Board last night, but our two best WRs are Boone and Wright, and Boone is easily our best route runner in my opinion. They should be our starting two. We have to find a consistent set of hands before we dive back into SEC play.
Note: I am acknowledging we also have o-line issues, but as for play calling, if our WRs that we have starting would catch the long balls we do throw, nobody would be bitching about it and we probably score 2-3 more TDs against Auburn.

I'm a big fan of James Wright (ever since his recruitment), but he's got to stop body catching.
I was a little surprised last night that our wideouts weren't getting separation on play action (minus the one seam route with OBJ where Mettenberger was hurried).

the problem is that 3 of our 4 best WRs (OBJ, landry, shep) are around 5-11 or so
our offense is built to throw outside or deep in the middle (only if there is no safety around)
you need big WRs to play perimeter routes, and we don't have one for the first time since 2000
using smaller/quicker WRs over the middle takes a lot of timing and advanced routes...LSU under miles don't do that shite

We have not had a lot of success with receivers being more physical than the db to go up and get the ball.

Ummm Boone has been the best WR so far.
Anyone doubting this is nutts.
Beckham is a good receiver no doubt, but he is not a #1 receiver. #2 maybe, but I would bet he would be more effective in the slot. We have no threat in the red zone for the fade route in our starting three. They are all small. A small WR corps is hard to make effective, even more so with a case of the dropsies.

Boone is a better receiver (not athlete) than OBJ. Jarvis is coming along and is very physical. Wright has shown more consistency than OBJ and Shep. IMO LSU should move OBJ to the slot receiver position(nightmare for LB's to cover). Put Boone at the X and Wright at the Y. Shep and Jarvis at the 4.
I love OBJ but he isn't a #1 go to receiver. He's a great athlete and should have a long football career but Boone is the most natural receiver on this team and Wright is behind him with his sure hands.
Rueben Randle would have thrived in this offense. I think he would have got into the first round in the 2013.

he can be if he just stops dropping the fricking ball. he didn't do that last year, but he's got a bad case of the dropsies this year
other than that, nothing prevents him from being a #1 WR, even being 5-10/11

This was never a problem for Arkansas.

You think Boone or Wright is better than OBJ? Or Jarvis?

arkansas runs an advanced passing game. LSU doesn't

boone and landry should be 1 and 2. i don't think boone has dropped a pass since he's been at LSU

Boone gets open, Landry is an incredible blocker, Wright seems to be the best "all around" WR, Shep has flashes of greatness (and sometimes even more than flashes), but stone hands, OBJ seems to be having a sophomore slump.
Where everybody is trashing the OL, QB play, receiver corps, playcalling, etc., I want to give some credit to the offensive team (everybody) in that Mett completed passes to 7 different receivers. While it would be great to have 1 monstrously sized possession receiver, 1 deep threat with at least above average hands, and a slot man to slice and dice the middle zones and force more man coverage (and take away a deep safety zone) - we don't have that balance - we have 4 relatively similiar guys getting the reps at WR.
We should make that work for us - flood zones, WR screens, run away from man with trips - whatever we can do to be both unpredictable and efficient (especially on third down).

it's just not what we do. i hope the coaches eventually figure out a fusion of an advanced passing game and the play action passing game they want, so that we use our players in ways that they can excel
