I think Gerry Dinardo's biggest mistake was not getting LSU to throw the checkbook at Carl Reese.Im sure LSU wasn't equipped to combat with Texas deep pockets in the late 90's. IMO Offense was never an issue while he was at LSU.

After Carl Reese left to Texas, Dinardo brought in Tepper. We were ranked in the Top 10 in 1998. Everything was looking great. It was Faulk's senior year. We were 3-0 and rolling. We then played Georgia at TS and couldn't stop Quincy Carter. From there, season unravelled. I believe we went 4-7 in '98 and 3-8 in '99.

Tepper was probably the #1 reason Dinardo was fired before the Arky game in '99. Maybe Tepper was a blessing in disguise. Saban gets hired, and the best 12 years in LSU history follow. I guess everything happens for a reason. We would have never reached the level we are at now with Dinardo leading us.

I disagree that everything was looking great and we were rolling. I was a student then too, but remember realizing we were fricked when Idaho put up 400+ yds of offense. We killed them on the scoreboard, but it was ugly for the defense. That was also the game I actually started to notice the whole "drop LB" crap. I don't have any coaching experience to speak of, but even then I was like "what the hell is this shite?"

Tepper pissed me off so badly that I wrote a letter to Dinardo one time. DiNardo actually write me back with a response. I was quite shocked.

I should have kept the letter.

Tepper was dumb enough to say that it would take three years to install all of the elements of his defense.

After one especially brutal ame in the first year, some announcer said, "I guess tackling wasn't in the package for year one".

I think I recall this too. I always assumed the administration wouldn't let Dinardo fire him after 1998 bc Dinardo couldn't possibly have been so loyal to let himself sink for Tepper. 1998 should've been a good year. Lot of heartbreaking losses esp the Bama game.
