One of the things I was struck by on the reread was Martin's characterization of Waymar Royce. I think it's indicative of the way the series goes and it's one of the reasons I love ASOIAF so much. Martin sets him up the entire time as an arrogant son of a bitch that feels good to hate. But, when the Others attack, Waymar stands his ground and is really quite heroic in his actions. He's surrounded by an alien enemy, yet he faces them bravely and attempts to buy time for his brothers to escape.

OK, I cannot look this up easily right now, and this question is driving me crazy.
Do the Iron Islanders have a "bastard" name, i.e. "Snow"? Can't remember.

Just finished the assigned chapters. This will be my first retread and I obviously have not put in the research as many of you so please forgive me if my thoughts are elementary.

This is going to be fun because I am realizing how many characters have already been brought up. No way I could've kept up with these on the first read.

A couple of thoughts/questions that may warrant discussion:

1. Do we ever find out for sure what happens to Will? It is Gerrad that is beheaded by Ned correct? Do we just assume Will is a wight now?

2. It is obvious to me that Ghost is more significant than the other dire wolves. He was the only one whose eyes were open and alert.

Yeah. Waymar had a good grip on him and I assume he is among the wight ranks.

I'm not sure if it means he is more significant. Personally I think his separation and eyes being open is signifying the fact that Jon is not really a brother to the Stark children. If R&L = T than it stands to reason that Ghost was off on his own. Also that he could have been born before the mother died, with the rest of the pups coming after. Some, me included, believe this is signifying Jon being born, then Lyanna dying.

And don't worry about this. You might find something that the rest of us are missing. Everyone here is just enjoying any discussion we can get. (Mainly to kill time until Winds come, so keep the discussion coming)

I still like my idea of the open eyes being a literary allusion to seeing or truth -as in the truth of Jon's parentage or the truth of his destiny. Flip back a page or two in this thread for more really good opinions on the pups.

It appears Tyrion, Dany, and presumably Jon all had mothers that died on childbirth. Can you say three heads? Still skeptical on RT + LS = JS.

Nice. I also like how that takes Aegon out of the equation. Presumably.

I agree. Much like the three eyed crow telling bran to open his eye.

This is what I meant by more significant. There is something about Ghost, or Ghost And Jon together, tthat their destinies are beyond that of the others.

Speaking of Direwolves, thought this was cool:

quote:

The dogs were such a hit among the cast that 15-year-old Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa, adopted the dog who plays her direwolf, Lady, after production had wrapped.

What a perfect ending to her character's sad tale.

Definitely a lot of symbolism here.

The mummer's dragon.......Didn't Varys run with a troop of mummeers when he was young? Is young Aegon Vary's and Ylirio's (SP?) dragon?

Why would Rhaegar's siblings romanticise his extra marital affair. He died fighting for the woman he loved. Does not compute.

You also have to notice in that same passage that they mention "the woman he loved", but then mention Princess Elia by name as if they are not the same person.

quote:

The midnight flight to Dragonstone, moonlight shimmering on the ship's black sails. Her brother Rhaegar battling the Usurper in the bloody waters of the Trident and dying for the women he loved. The sack of King's Landing by the one Viserys called the Usurper's dogs, the lords Lannister and Stark. Princess Elia of Dorne pleading for mercy as Rhaegar's heir was ripped from her breast and murdered before her eyes.

As do I.

I also found it interesting that Jon was the only one to actually hear Ghost. Neither Ned or Bran could hear the pup and Jon seemingly heard him out of nowhere.

I wonder how many Unsullied Illyrio has stashed away. In Dany's chapter, he only shows a few as household guards, but they only sale them in groups of 100s of 1000s. I would not be surprised to learn that he has more, Unsullied ready to fight for him.
