For the past 4 years I've treated my wife to a really nice meal in NOLA for her birthday....it's become, pretty much a tradition.

Past 4 years:

Rest. August
Stellas
Mr. John's
Gautreau's

I'm looking for a recommendation for this years meal. Not really worried about the $$$, just want a great meal / experience. Birthday is the week before Xmas if that makes a difference.

Places I've thought of:

Galatoire's
La Boca
Upperline
Bayona
Brigtsen's

Galatoire's is always fun during the holidays.

ETA: Only go to Galatoire's if you know the drill. Gautreau's would be awesome.

Solo, what do you mean "know the drill". I'll def. look into Clancy's.

Gautreau's was excellent last year.......sweetbreads and foie gras

I'd go with Bayona.

Don't go to Galatoire's if you have never been.

Why not? What's so special about Galatoire's compared to August, Stellas, or Gautreau's?

It is often more about a social scene than a place to have a romantic dinner for two. It is all about having your own waiter and frankly while I like the food, the level of cooking isn't close to most of those other places.

All that being said, I love the place.

Not a fan of galatoire's. Mediocre food. And if the waiter don't know you he treats ya like shite. Bayona, gw fins, domenica, all are fun. If yall are going on a Friday or Saturday, criollo @ hotel monteleone is fun. Louie Prima's daughter Lina Prima plays from 9-1am and is a good time.

What about Restaurant R'evolution. Had a wonderful meal there a couple of months ago. You mentioned foie gras and do their's very well.

Ask to be seated in the center dining area, it is the most formal and would be perfect for a romantic dinner.

My wife and I love trying out the newer restaurants in the city, but for any really special event (anni, at least one of our birthdays, etc) we go to Commanders. It's a perfect classic New Orleans style restaurant experience. Nothing really experimental like some of the newer restaurants mentioned here. We've always received perfect service and never left disappointed with anything we ordered.

Nah - it just closed as a full service restaurant and has re-opened as some sort of a salad/sandwich place which closes at 7.
All of the other suggestions are great. My vote would be Upperline. Just need to call and ensure it has re-opened since Isaac. Has some minor water damage.

The food is far from mediocre. It's excellent for what it is...classic New Orleans.

I don't have a certain waiter there and I've never been treated badly. In fact, the service has always been just fine.

I've eaten there many times, Boon. How many times have you been there?

I wouldn't consider it a romantic setting if that's what you're looking for. It's upbeat, fun and a good people watching restaurant.

Agree that Commander's is a great birthday restaurant, though it's not "quiet". Not noisy, but people are whispering in the dark.

If you go to the Upperline, ask for the back room away from the front door. There are only about 4 or 5 tables in there.

Clancy's is good, but it's definitely not romantic. There's that small claustrophobic room off the bar. I haven't been upstairs. Is that just for private parties?

La Boca is casual, but small and dark at night. You could achieve the romantic aspect there just by virtue of the size.

What would be fun is to get the table in the kitchen at Emeril's. The food is terrific. The chef is attentive and you'd be the only people in there. If you call now, you might get it. I've done it twice and it was superb both times. I want to do it again. Can't say it's that romantic, but it's special being catered to in there all by your lonesome. You're not right on top of the line but you can see everything going on or ignore it if you wish.

Is way under recommended on this Board. It is a fantastic restaurant. For a dinner for two right now I would say Bistro Daisy could be just the perfect choice.
