Edwin Edwards and the good ole boys(forerunner of rantards)

Edwin stacked the LSU system and Board Of Supervisors with his political cronies. The circus that each coaching search created was mind boggling!

These hacks were usually either stupid, or focused on lining their pockets, not on maintaining excellence.

The good ole boys wanted someone with "LSU Ties" to be AD, they supported Joe Dean as AD. They also handed the job to Skip. Emmert wanted to conduct a national search.

Mark Emmert was the best thing that ever happened to LSU. The combination of Blabineaux Blanco and the return to power of the GOB led to his leaving.

Ruffin Rodrigue said today on 104.5 that he thinks if Jindal had won in 2004, Emmret and Saban would still be here.

Saban left for the siren song of the NFL, not money, I am not sure how the Emmert situation impacted him.

Saban was going to the NFL regardless. He played footsies with the pros every year he was at LSU and was just waiting for the time to bolt. No hard feelings, but he was using us as we used him. He was never a longterm guy at LSU -- he had to scratch that NFL itch.

That's probably true, he flirted with the NFL at MSU but he was close with Emmert and did turn down a lot of opprotunities.

Purple pants! in Lexington (1995).

DiNardo's last game at Vandy before taking the LSU job ... home loss to Tennessee, 65-0.

The era of 1980-2000 ... a lot of dark days for a once proud program which had won consistently from year to year. When Dietzel was hired, Mac was gone. Maybe Rein would have been successful, but we'll never know. Several of Rein's assistants got fired after Stovall's 1981 team finished 3-7-1 and got clobbered by Tulane.

Not sure if this answer has been addressed yet, so forgive if it has.

But i think the best explanation lies in the first thing he did when he got here. His impression was our athletic and academic facilities for athletes had failed to keep up with the competition. The way he saw it was...why would quality athletes want to come to BatonRouge to play if they could go elsewhere and have access to facilities that were on par or better than what athletes playing in the NFL had. He recognized the role that an athlete's parent plays in their child's college choice. Parents tend to think more practically than players. The days of having hot chicks jiggle in front of recruits was past. Yes you may still need that, but when other good programs had that and more, why sign with a program that had hot chicks as their best selling point?

Saban brought the bling. Gotta have the infrastructure.

Only time I ever had any respect for Hallman was when he got in Dale's face and stood up for his players the night Anthony Marshall and Shaq went after it......

The putrid run for the '90s had many reasons, but the basic problem was 2. The main and overriding reason was the enactment and enforcement of Prop 48 which coupled with the LA education eliminated the great recruiting base LSU had in LA. Virtually none of LA top 20 qualified. Mike Archer was a very young coach with out a name and reputation had to go out of state. He was unable to successfully recruit the quality players needed.

Archer had a plan to counteract and make sure the effect on LA recruits were short lived. He wanted to do like TX A&M, OK and other schools elected to do on a lesser scale than needed at LSU. He wanted to take the best players in LA and place them in JUCOs and get them a couple of years later. This plan was thwarted by the BOS in the person of Charlie Cusimano who made his now infamous statement, "No Jucos, LSU will grow their own". Mike Archer was too young to be forceful enough to get his program approved.

The schools such as A&M, OK, AU who picked up the good jucos made a good run. The others who elected to go the other way such as LSU & TX lost out.Starting 89 LSU was not as far off in winning that the influx of 6 - 10 jucos a year might not have made the difference.

It was not until around 2000 that LSU was unaffected by the education problem in LA. DiNardo had some very good classes in '98 and '99 which won the 2001 SECC. You can almost say Saban got the job at exactly the right time.

The other problem was the race card other schools used against LSU. LSU was the last big conference school in the NCAA to allow blacks. It started changing in the Mid 70s but it takes a generation or more to get the smell off. So LSU was not getting some of the athletes even in the 90s. Schools like FSU, TXA&M, Miami were using this to get some of the top players in LA. Some LA people were even helping them. But that also finished running it course by 2000.

What this analysis play to is the idea that it takes a lot of good football players recruited every year (15-17) to win enough football games to compete for championships. That is where we are today.

I disagree.

Mike Williams (DB) was our first black football player in '72. Most of the SEC schools started integrating about this same time. I think Bama had two on their roster (Sylvester Croom and John Mitchell). By the late 70's we probably had as many black players if not more than most SEC schools (and with few excpetions any NCAA school). By the early 80's we were starting a mostly black team. If I'm not mistaken, only 7 of our 22 starters in '82 were white (Elko, Joiner on D and Risher, Montz, Gambrell, and two G's on O).

Other schools were plucking the best of LA's talent in the 90's because we were down and they were up.

Actually it was Lora Hinton. Mike was the first who actually played due to Hinton's injuries.

Again, not you, but posters keep the myth going that Spurrier was a candidate....NO HE WASN'T.

Spurrier wanted the LSU job bad. He was a decade ahead of Saban in recognizing LSU as a sleeping giant.

Started under archer......the late 80s set the table..

Increased exposure of kids in La to other schools hurt but...

In 1986 LSU won the sec....but missed out on the national player of the year to their bowl opponent...,

So, Bill, considering 1988, youre saying Wes Jacob, Chad Loup, Jeff Cancienne, Roovelroe Swan, Corey White, Kevin Mawae, etc. were not top 20 talent?!

You're wrong.

Outside of Kenny Marshal and Scott Estay, all top bluechip kids qualified.....

This is Bull shite !!!!!

Get off your lazy Butt and do some homework! The classes were good...not great....but good enough to win.

Coaching....Curly...Tepper and few other clowns did their part. BUT the biggest problem WAS NOT totally a lack of talent!
