A group from West Salem that included project manager Ryan Allbritton, Bill McNutt, West Salem principal Ed John, Sutherland and West Salem football coach Shawn Stanley spearheaded a drive to raise $437,000 to replace the green FieldTurf that was installed for the school’s 2002 opening and had since worn out.
But FieldTurf offered a price break if West Salem chose a unique color so the school is going with a black field at a cost of just under $300,000.

Being in Oregon, they should be able to get away with it. Wouldn't really work in the South, just too hot. Then again, most games are at night anyway.

that thing would suck to play on. I would not want to play during the day on that.

They practice on this field during the day?
So how much do they get sued the first time somebody passes out from heat exhaustion?

From the article:

Sutherland said he read a study that said that the hottest FieldTurf color was gold because it reflects heat and that black doesn’t reflect the heat as bad as some colors.

That won't happen very often.

WTF is up with people wanting different color turfs. I thought you'd want a football field to resemble the color of natural grass. This crap is a joke. I'd rather a school to have crappy looking dead, brown grass than some black, red, or blue turf.

I think it's both cool and disturbing how high schools are pimping out their stadiums with multi-million dollar stadiums, jumbotrons and now, custom turf.

Uhhhhh saving 137K. When it's time for West Monroe to replace our turf, I don't care if it's pink if taxpayers save 137K.

Trying to watch a Boise home game on TV literally -- and I do mean "literally" -- hurts my eyes

Can the NCAA outlaw this?
could an NFL team do this if they wanted?

That is correct. It just absorbs it and radiates it back out instead. The reflected heat on a lighter colored surface at least has a chance to disperse so that some of it reflects away from players. The black turf just absorbs it all and radiates it straight up.
You can tell the difference between walking on concrete in the middle of a sunny day and then stepping onto black asphalt. The asphalt is a lot hotter.
