Basketball recruiting analysis with current commits

There are several basketball recruiting threads going on, with several overlapping discussions. I wanted to share some thoughts on the recent news in one thread:
1. There is no doubt that LSU has had Deng and Odoh wrapped up for a while. David Patrick placed Deng at Lee Junior College, while Odoh has been a lock for LSU all along, with only academics standing in the way.
This was a timed news release for both of them, with the recent commitment of Damian Jones to Vanderbilt and LSU failing to make the finalists for Karviar Shepherd. With Jordan Mickey coming in for an official this weekend, LSU needed a little PR boost. Also, Mickey wants to play the 3 and having a center and power forward locked up is important.
2. Deng Deng: I had a source tell me a while back that David Patrick had placed a "7-footer" at a junior college and that LSU would eventually get him. Well, it appears this is the guy and the size was a little off. Patrick has connections at at least three junior colleges that I have been able to confirm, where there is a steady stream of Australians. Most of his connections come from his time at ULL and Nicholls. Several of the former assistants there are at the JUCO level now.
One overlooked aspect of the Deng commitment is the potential benefit for the recruitment of Thon Maker. With Patrick as an assistant, and a fellow Sudanese/Aussie on the team, that will be a huge positive in the recruitment of Maker. He will likely be making unofficial visits to LSU games over the next few years. Having a player like Deng to host him on these visits is very beneficial. Deng will be a senior in 2016, which is Maker's senior year in high school. Also, don't expect Deng to be the last Sudanese/Aussie. There are a lot of them playing in Australia right now, as well as U.S. prep schools and JUCOs.
3. I would have loved to have John Odoh eligible for the 12-13 season. However, I think this will be better for the long term. He is a freak athlete that has NBA potential, if he can refine his skill. Having a redshirt season at LSU will help him a lot. Having a season to work on his academics, as well as his play will be great.
4. I like these two commitments a lot. LSU needed to sign at least 4 post players. It is not realistic to expect them to jump out and sign 4 top 100 high school players in the post. Deng (sophomore) and Odoh (junior) along with a couple of freshmen will help to stagger the classes and will be better for scholarship allocation.
5. I expect LSU to sign 6 players this year. 4 post, 1 point guard, 1 wing.

This is a great point regarding John Odoh. And it also gives him a year to bulk up and become stronger to play in SEC.

As for Mickey wanting to play the wing, do you think that affects Jarrell Martin? Or do you think Martin will purely be a stretch 4?

I think Martin is definitely a 4. I think the addition of Odoh is important for him, because he knows he won't have to play center.

Did I read it right that Mickey is coming in this weekend for an official visit? If that's the case, I think it's a great time for Les to make James Wright the focal point of the passing attack. 
I would think it has to help our chances that his brother is already on campus. Hopefully there are a lot of unofficials throughout the football season to go along with the OV this weekend.

Yes, he is scheduled to be at the game with his family. He is supposedly going to decide by the end of September.

Potential is a big word. No doubt, he does athletically. His skill needs to improve. His juco coach says that no doubt he can make a living playing basketball.

I don't know. However, a team with zero attrition under a new coach is almost unheard of. Someone won't like his style, their playing time, etc. I think Courtney will either have a really good season this year, or he will be gone. Same with Stringer. Both need to step up, or move on.

Six recruits makes sense. Consider this math:
Let's say we return Hickey, Collins,Stringer, Morgan, Coleman, Hammink, Courtney and JOB. That's eight, leaving five spots. But there's a chance JOB leaves early, or Stringer or Courtney decide to transfer, if things don't work out for them this coming season. We could have five, six or even seven spots to fill. Right now, it's five at minimum.

And there is really no sense to save any scholarships, because the following season a minimum of three scholarships will be open.

These two commits leave a lot to be desired, particularly given that the rationale to fire Trent was largely based on his inability to recruit. We just lost Damian Jones, a top 100 instate player, to Vanderbilt.
Not saying he won't prove to be a good recruiter, but these types of players will land CJJ the same rep Trent had. Hoping Mickey and Martin come aboard. Deng and Odoh are role players at best.

If Odoh comes to LSU in August 2013, will he have 4 years to play 3 seasons of basketball? Or 3 to play 2?

He will come in January of 2013. The 12-13 season will count as a redshirt season. He will have 2 to play 2, starting with the 13-14 season

If Trent would've recruited a few good junior college players his first year, he would still be LSU's coach.
Johnny needs to stabilize the roster and build some depth. Expecting him to sign 5 highly ranked freshman to immediately make an impact is not very realistic.
Also, what film and/or scouting reports do you have on Jones or Deng or Odoh? Do rivals rankings carry that much weight for you? I like Jones, would definitely take him, but he averaged 8 ppg in HS off the bench. In summer AAU he had Julius Randle, the number 1 player in the country down low to play off of., plus a loaded backcourt.
He is more of a project and role player at this point.
