I went on a rant about Entergy this past Saturday. To be fair I'd like to revisit the issue.

I was frustrated that I had gone days without power and was sweating balls, as were my wife and dog (although, technically, dogs do not perspire). And we didn't know what the hell the plan was.

But, realistically, here's the deal. This was a large, slow moving storm that produced significant wind and water damage AND delayed deployment of restoration teams because of its slow movement. We were without power for four days. Honestly, I suppose we have no reason to complain considering Entergy crews couldn't get to work until some time Thursay and, at that stage, they were having to assess damage in various areas.

My frustration stemmed from the fact that the Entergy officials appearing in the media were never specific about neighborhoods, progress in those neighborhoods, problems in specific neighborhoods, specific estimates, plan of attack, etc. I think they could have done a better job with communication, and that may have relieved some frustration and anxiety.

It remains to be seen as to what shakes out over the contracting of outside companies, staging and allocation of resources. I heard a couple of disturbing things, but it's hearsay at this point.

Again, I guess my point is that four days without power during and after a hurricane is not unreasonable, all things considered.

After Hurricane Lili in 2002, we were out south of Lafayette for I want to say 7 days if not more ... Hurricane Rita was I think 4 days.

Given the magnitude of the outage your wait wasn't outrageous. It's always easier to be clearminded about it once your power is back on and you are cooled off!

I really dont understand where the pent up hatred for Entergy is coming from. It's was already there before they started.

Most of the affected know the drill with hurricanes. Is it just because it wasn't hyped up coming in and they all thought it was just a glorified thunderstorm?

I think coming out of the storm around 30% of their entire customer base was out.

With a lot of the affected area being a total blackout with multiple failures on the lines. This was widely publicized.

And yet people were bitching up a storm on THURSDAY. They were working on the problem of having to rebuild infrastructure for less than 12 hours, and people were already tapping their shoes at Entergy impatiently.

That said, I would hope Entergy learns something from this storm.

It took 2 weeks for the power to be restored following Katrina at my parents house. It also took 10 days for power to be restored at my friend's apartment in Baton Rouge following Gustav.

4 days is nothing. I just think that most people complaining have never gone close to 4 days without power.

Cooler heads always prevail once the problem has been resolved, no pun intended. I can promise you something will be learned from this storm, as they will meet to discuss what worked, what didn't, and how they can do it better. You can always learn from events.

While I agree that played a role, I'm confused as to when that became expected.

The outage map was a niceties trying to give some info. That is a new development.

And there were some people bitching (not nesscessarily you) that the info there wasn't up to the hour updated. And oh God help those crews souls if they missed the original projections. I can't imagine the amount of delays and wasted manpower to actually provide that kind of updated info constantly to the public.

I didn't see this level of bitching when it took Metro BR nearly a WEEK to *start* to come back online after Gustav. Even LSU, with it's own underground utilities and power station was down for a few days. With many subdivisions in highly urban areas 2-3 weeks to come back.

In fact, I don't remember much bitching at all

This time? Within 48 hours I saw Jefferson parish residents calling for the resignation of Entergy's CEO

What's was the difference there for the different response?

Well, i am still without power as of now. That being said if i were these guys trying to get everyones elec. back on listening to all the bitching and moaning i would take my sweet time, or just say frik you and go home. These guys have a job to do, and we dont know what all rules they have, and that have to have a safety meeting before each location they work at. Dont be a john young and show your arse on t.v. To try to get votes for next year. That is all

I know you and I had our exchanges the other day. Believe me, I'm no Entergy apologist. I've just been through a number of storms and the recovery following each storm. It's a frustrating process to see an electric system absolutely destroyed by a hurricane every few years. But these guys work long, hard hours to get things back to normal. I do my best to defend these guys and provide insight on what goes on in these hectic times.

I'm glad you're back on. Let's hope the next big storm bypasses us all. No hard feelings.

If they gave specific estimates, then the public would have wanted to hold them to it. You simply can't do that after a storm that big.

I don't really mean specific times, etc. I mean updates on progress in specific neighborhoods, problems encountered, their plans for those neighborhoods.

First rule of estimating is to under promise and over deliver.

If they'd of come out Friday morning and said 14-21 days, you'd of been just as upset.

In this case, no estimate is probably a better PR move than inflated estimates you would have gotten.

Entergy has all but admitted that they didn't handle logistics very well for this hurricane as for as getting crews ready to go and getting work orders to them, etc.

I thought I saw a quote where they may have under estimated the damage they were expecting also.

Either way, I agree. They will hopefully learn a thing or two from this one.

Have you considered the logistical headache that represents for zero benefit?

Basically arguing for that is a statement that you are okay with power taking longer to be restored in exchange for being informed.

Unless you just want them to dump internal documents into public domain.
