re: Boat steering wheel froze up

most have a grease fittingon the cable at the back by the motor...the grease is probably dried up and is sticking the cable...

If it is all steel and not like the older plastic covered cables, I would try to use a propane torch to liquify the grease again and then get some grease into the cable and work it back and forth a lot...

I used a rubber mLlet to knock it loose. I stopped using grease, it just gums it up

Used grease, but clean it once a year and one will not have any problems.

or stuck steering rod.

try removing the rod from the tilt tube...if you have problems taking it out, it's the aforementioned old grease. disconnect the cable from the rod and tap it out, get a wire brush and an extension for your drill (I used mine from my gun cleaning kit once...along with the copper brush), and clean the tube with diesel or some other solvent. then clean the rod, lightly grease the rod, reinsert and reseat the cable, and pump some new marine grease in tube.

but a bad helm is a solid guess, too...

Change everything.

The cable is going to break. Spend $200 and get a new cable and helm.

I went through this last year. You most likely broke a gear in the helm. You need to replace the helm and the steering cable.

A tip for you. Duct tape the new cable to the old one and pull it through. It's an easy job to do yourself
