Puzzled by the new ESPN approach to internet programming

Seems custom made to drive people to other avenues for their sports programming.
I'm in an airport killing time and figure "hey, I'll watch Gameday on the computer"... but they want sign in information and I don't feel like that even though I do have ESPN through my cable provider.
So I switch over to foxsports and then notice there's a 8AM Notre Dame/Navy game and now I'm watching this cbssports instead of listening to the Gameday folks.
Doesn't this seem like a really bad idea if you are ESPN? Shouldn't you still make money on the commercials by streaming your product to whoever wants to watch it? Now I'm just doing it with CBS instead of them.

Cable companys pay espn so people can stream it, so they're getting paid. Sucks cox isnt one of the cable providers that is in on it.

Apparently Uverse isn't one of the approved providers for online streaming.
