Last night I saw a highlight of the Kent St./Towson game where following a Towson muff of a punt, a Kent player picked up the ball and ran the wrong way. Towson tackled him before he got to the endzone.

I do know, from being a football official, that a kick does not end on a muff and that the kicking team cannot advance a kick.

But the highlight didn't explain the final outcome of the play. Did anyone see the game and knows what happened? Did Kent get the ball where the runner was tackled?

Didn't see it. Think that I read that they brought it back to where the ball was recovered.

He didn't advance the ball though.

there was another thread only a couple threads below you, but I guess we can do a new one

here is the link

LINK

as far as the OP...it is interesting. I always thought you couldnt "advance" a muffed punt, but he never actually "advanced it". Can you not "retreat" (I dontk now what else to call it) a muffed punt? Is this in the ruleboook?

the whole play was a clusterfrick of greatness

Mongolian Empire bro

But that was still funny stuff. Why on earth did Towson chase after him? They are partially to blame too

I understand that. That's why I wondered if Kent got the ball where the runner was downed

According to the blog, the officials decided (after some discussion) that the ball was down where the runner picked it up.

It was Kent State's ball on the 7. Just goes to show how big of a cluster that play was. The ball runner forgot which direction he had come from, Towson decided to tackle him instead of letting him score 2 points for their team, and the officials were too blown away by the stupidity of both teams to blow the play dead.

If he had fumbled the "return" think of all the yardage up the field they would have gained.

That brings up another question. Since they got the ball where it was recovered would the officials have allowed a safety had he made it to the endzone?

Obviously no. Kent ball at the 7.

If it was a fumble, recovered by Kent State at the Towson 7, and the guy picks it up and runs it backwards, why did the officials give it to Kent State at the point of recovery?

If he had picked it up and run it into the nearest end zone, would that not have been a touchdown?

This whole thing makes my brain hurt.

It wasn't a fumble. it was a muffed punt. You can advance a fumble, but not a muffed punt.

ETA: apparently you can't "retreat" a muffed punt either

Guy in a different jersey is running with the ball. you haven't heard the whistle. Therefore, you tackle him.

it was bootiful. i mean, the ball was not advanced so it should have stood, imo. i love the intensity of the runner who didn't have a clue what he was doing and the towson guys busting arse to tackle him from scoring a touchdown for them. i am still laughing about that play.
