Tiger, inho I would get a M&P 40 and wait to get a 1911 when you get a 45

A polymer .45 is gonna kick like a sumbitch. But if you wanna stick around $500, I don't know. You can get a Beretta 96 (40 cal) for a little bit more than that. I love mine.
I would stick with Glock though. I'm partial to XD and XDm because that's what I own, but you can probably find a Glock for a little bit cheaper.
I've been wanting a Glock 17 for a long time, but I own too many guns as it is.

Not really. My Kahr CW45 weighs about 20 oz empty. Yes, it does recoil, but it's really not that bad. In fact, a very light 380 (like my Kel-Tec P3AT weighing in at less than 10 oz light) has similar barrel flip as does the CW45. The 45 ACP has a reptutation as having horribly bad recoil, but it's not that bad. If folks learn the proper grip/hold and have a good mindset to shooting it, they'll most likely find the 45 ACP manageable. OTOH, a Ruger Redhawk w/ heavy loaded 45 Long Colt (320 gr bullet at 1300 fps) or a Thompson Center Contender w/ full power 375 JDJ loads (275 gr bullet at 2100 fps) definitely has noticable recoil! :-)

It really doesn't. I've stated before that a .45 does not have a snappy recoil. It's very smooth recoil.
As to the stoeger being made on Beretta machines, beretta owns stoeger, so yeah probably is the same machine. Beretta also owns: Sako, Benelli, Franchi, Tikka and uberti.

they don't own Benelli or Franchi, they use their licensing to import them.
don't get the two confused

On Bud's I saw around $375 or so last I checked.
And I agree that .45 ACP really isn't a snappy round at all. 40 actually has a snappier recoil because it's a higher pressure round. 45 is very actually very low pressure. It's just intimidating looking because of how large it is.
Having shot a variety of .45s, the polymer ones will definitely remind you that they're polymer when you shoot them, compared to the heavy metal-framed ones. But they are far from unshootable. I shot an M&P45 all day recently and it was a blast, literally and figuratively.

Never used or heard of Buds gun shop- is this site reputable? You buy from the site and have them ship it to a local dealer?
ETA: Signed up for the site- quoted for $429 shipped

Alright, so it's a bit over $400...
You're still getting a lot of gun for a little over 4 hundy. You'll enjoy it forever.
Bud's is an amazing place to shop. It is one of the largest online firearms dealers in the country. I've ordered 3 guns from them and it's been a very painless experience.
You order and pay through them online, so it's tax free. But, the catch is, if you use a credit card, there is a 3%-4% processing fee, so that would count as a low tax rate, per say. But given you'd only spend ~$430, it would only be an extra ~$17 tops. If you send them a money order, you get it for the price you are quoted at $429, but I think the money you would spend on shipping and buying that money order may not be worth it. I would just pay the extra processing fee.
But before ordering, you must call a local gun shop that is a certified FFL to receive the firearm for you. You call and ask them their processing fee and if they will receive a transfer for you. I'm not sure if you're in the Baton Rouge area, but the best I've found is LA Gun and Reloading off Old Jefferson. They are really nice guys and I've transferred 3 guns through them for $20 bucks, which is one of the cheapest transfer rates. Just as a point of reference, Bowie's and Jim's charge $50 bucks for a transfer.
So, to put it altogether for you, it would be $429 + $17.16 (4% of 429) + 20 = $466.16 for a great .45 ACP handgun.
I've bought 3 guns through Bud's:
Beretta 90 two in 9mm (my first handgun)
Kahr CM9 in 9mm (my carry gun that I trust my life to)
Remington 870 Tactical (my home defense shotgun)
They are great to work with, shipping is free, and you don't pay 9% LA sales tax. It's quite a steal.
If you can find a better .45 on there that you like more, then don't hesitate to buy from them. You will not regret it.

I see the Springfield XD .45acp is $500 there. I'm going to do some more research on them- I really like the sounds of the Cougar since it is a full metal gun

1+
The last gun I bought from Bud's I used a money order to save the credit card processing fee. The only risk to this is that they COULD be out of stock of the gun by the time the money order reaches them. Worked out just fine for me. Using the money order option, your total cost will be: cost of gun + cost of transfer fee + fee for buying money order (if any).
If Bud's is out of stock of the gun you want, you can sign up for them to send you an email notification once it's in stock. That worked well for me.

They also have a separate warehouse that constantly has changing stock, so you can always call them and see what their stock looks like. They usually have quite a few of a certain gun in stock.

I've owned one in a few dreams before. I think it's just a sick avatar picture.
This is my 1911. A Smith and Wesson Tactical wearing tiger stripe G10 grips.

Thank you, sir.
What are the details on Volkmann? I've only heard a couple things about them.
