Question for the board, does anybody know what the law is on ending a curious alligators life if it is in hot pursuit of your lab while picking up a bird. I've heard a lot of people not using their dogs in the marsh during teal season because of the alligators, but mine got done with school this summer and I really want to hunt him during teal season so he will be in prime shape for big duck season. I know one thing for sure I will have a hard time not blasting any alligator if it goes near my dog.

I dont have a dog, but if I did no way I would bring him. Just not worth it IMO.

Dont bring your dog unless you have rice fields. Just take some dead ducks home and work him in a pond with a gun and blanks. Its not worth the risk

Not worth gettin your dog et. Plus you'd make Green Jeans madder than shite. You might as well go buy Dolly a couple bottles of Boones, get her fricked up and let him catch you cornholing her in the butt. He'd be no less pissed.

I wouldn't do it in marsh. I hunt a pretty big crawfish pond that gets scanned for gators pretty regularly. They usually get checked out. We hunt with dogs.

You probably wont see the gator until it's already got your dog in the marsh.... Like said before, bring some birds home and work him in a pond.

Agreed, but I've been guilty of the same...bringing dog, not shooting gator.

I've shot at them to get them to stop pursuing a duck though. Steel shot don't phase em

In 30 somthing years I am only aware of two cases where a dog was hunting and was attacked by a gator.....

One - the dog ran up to and barked at it in grand cheneir

Two - dog going to get a teal near gheens and got grabbed right after it grabbed the duck...

I have use my dogs nearly every hunt....only gator problems we had was one a few feet behind the blind - we were in much more danger than the dog

I'm sure you have the right to protect your property, and only a dick who cite you if you killed a 'gator that was after your retriever. However, I would not bring my dog teal hunting as I've heard tragic stories involving dogs and alligators.

I'd rather kill a gator before he got my dog then have to kill him after, but this is why we leave the dogs behind for teal season.

no. 6 steel at a decent distance would probably be enough to change his mind without injuring him... but it's not a sure thing.

It's really not worth it.

all the advise i was given last year said don't bring him and i didnt. but like you he was fresh out of school and i really wanted to get the work in with him. i kind of regret not bringing him obviously because there weren't any gators in the marsh we hunted, but i guess its best to play it safe. you always have the option to bring them and not let them go out the blind till late late in the hunt. if he wont get in the way too much it would do him some good just to be in the real situation with you.
