LSU Colors

I am sure this has been discussed before, but when did LSU use yellow instaed of gold and why? I don't think of our colors resembling anything of a gold color.

I have no idea when they started doing it, but I would imagine that it had to do with yellow looking better than gold on merchandise.

I do prefer yellow over gold and I am glad we got away from it, but that Nike pro combat uniform last year looked real good with the gold in it.

is it just me or is the yellow alot lighter on the football uniforms than it was 15 years ago?

Not saying that you can't sell merchandise with gold - just saying that yellow looks better.
So, if you're LSU back in the day, maybe you make the switch to see if you can sell more merchandise?
It could also have been due to the advent of being shown on TV more and figuring the the yellow looks better than the gold on TV?
Or, they just wanted to fricking change colors...
Which, to me, is ludicrous that they refer to the word "Gold" in their marketing, yet "Gold" is in yellow.

gold is not just gold. there is bright gold(our current golden rod color to be exact which some refer to as canary yellow), dull gold(old gold) and metallic gold(see saints).

When I went to LSU in the 50"s we were Purple & Gold. Don't know why they changed. I liked the old better.

LSU's gold is not canary yellow, which is lighter. It's more school bus yellow or Yellow Cab yellow.

I used to know this but I think they changed back in the early 70's when they introduced the helmets they currently wear now. The yellow has gotten lighter over the years.

I believe it is lighter now than it used to be. I have a compilation pic showing several smaller pics from the win over Bama in '82, and the yellow is darker, almost a mustard yellow.

Colors: Purple and Gold
There is some discrepancy in the origin of Royal Purple and Old Gold as LSU's official colors.
It is believed that those colors were worn for the first time by an LSU team in the spring of 1893 when the LSU baseball squad beat Tulane in the first intercollegiate contest played in any sport by Louisiana State University. Team captain E.B. Young reportedly hand-picked those colors for the LSU squad.
Later that year, the first football game was played. On November 25, 1893, football coach/chemistry professor Dr. Charles Coates and some of his players went into town to purchase ribbon to adorn their gray jerseys as they prepared to play the first LSU gridiron game.
Stores were stocking ribbons in the colors of Mardi Gras -- purple, gold and green. -- for the coming Carnival season. However, none of the green had yet arrived at Reymond's Store at the corner of Third and Main streets. Coates and quarterback Ruffin Pleasant bought up all of the purple and gold stock and made it into rosettes and badges.

I've heard that the original ribbon colors were more yellow than gold. We all know that Mardi Gras gear comes in both the old "real" gold and the yellow gold. I'm thinking those first ribbons were more yellow than gold, so we stuck with them and that is where we are today.
I've also seen posts concerning the changing of the yellow's hue through the years, so it is definitely debatable.

According to HELMET HUT, LSU made the switch from "old gold" to "athletic gold" in 1956. My guess would be that maybe they wanted to differentiate themselves from other schools using "old gold" helmets like Navy, Army & Notre Dame. The "athletic gold" was a much more unique color in college FB among the big schools compared with the "old gold."

Before 56 and the birth of PMS colors each person's interpretation of what PURPLE and/or GOLD was different.
It was not as much a change IMO, as the process of trying to standardize the look of the school colors... such may have resulted in change from the previously used colors.
