Every time he comes out with another sample chapter, I'm hoping its not the last thing that comes out. Hope he's taking care of his health at least some.

He did a Q&A about this time last year and mentioned that he was 25% done. So, I'm gonna guess he is probably up to 26% by now.

Great chapter. First sample chapter I have read. It makes me want to do a re-read of the whole series.

He's released like 5 right? I liked the Selmy one
Posted on 3/27/14 at 6:21 pm to putt23
There's a theon one, one by a sand snake, the Arya one, and there are summaries of a Tyrion and a Selmy chapter he read at a show.
So that makes five I think.

Just re-read the Arya chapter. In the 4th or 5th paragraph she mentions in her dream she was being watched by "a tree".
Has to be Bran, right?

They are such important characters to this entire epic. I can't wait to see their arcs.

Surprised that no one has mentioned this is likely what will get Arya kicked out of her apprenticeship. She just committed the cardinal sin. She judged and bestowed the gift (in a very clumsy manner by the way) where she wanted to. She made it personal. The Kindly Man warned her. I doubt she gets a second chance with this. In general the writing in this chapter seems somewhat less fleshed out than the published work. GRRM probably did write this a while ago. It just seems more like a draft than a finished product.

It says January 27th on it
I wouldn't be surprised if she kills The Kindly Man

Pretty sure she is aware of this and is on the way out the door, perhaps back to Westeros with the quickness.

Which is why she said she was going to miss everyone at the theatre...

This is straight from GRRM himself about when this chapter was written, etc:
"I mentioned that this chapter had quite a history. It's true. The first draft was written more than a decade ago. Originally, it was intended to be the opening Arya chapter after the infamous "five year gap," her first appearance in A DANCE WITH DRAGONS as initially conceived. Then it was supposed to be a part of A FEAST FOR CROWS, after I abandoned the five year gap and split the books. Then it was going to be the concluding Arya chapter in A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. But it seemed more like an opening chapter than a closing one, so shortly before ADWD was published my editor and I agreed to remove it from DANCE and shift it over into WINDS. Of course, it has been revised, tightened, polished, and tweaked at every step of the way, so the version on my website has some significant differences from the "five year gap" version."

And someone asked him about the placement of this Arya chapter in the novels and if it gave away that Cercei was back in power:
"It is the current draft. I would not say it is the final draft. I always do one last run-through and polish when a book is turned in, and so eventually (NOT tomorrow, let's not start rumors here) I will do that with Mercy. Even before that, the chapter's placement in the novel often requires tweaks, and I do have a long history of moving chapters around and rearranging the chronology until I hit on the best possible sequence."

No doubt. She is a quick learner, she just killed a true Westerosi badass from her list.
