Does anybody polish the feed ramps on any of their firearms? I've looked at the process and it seems pretty simple and seems like it could really contribute to the reliability of the weapon.

I wouldn't do it. It's a good way to ruin your frame or bbl or both if you frick up. Your gun should be reliable out of the box if you chose a reputable piece. If it isn't, I'd send it back.

I'm pretty sure it is, but I'd be a little leary with sticking a dremel near my $1000 gun

You're supposed to polish not grind... so if you use the proper polishing tools its not a problem.

Almost all feed ramps come polished from the factory now. Just about every feed ramp on my handguns have a mirror-like finish...

The feed ramp is part of the barrel, not a piece of the frame itself, at least on a 1911 it is. My XdM came with a polished feed ramp. It originally was used for better feeding of hollow points, but works good for pretty much all ammo.

My personal experience is yes......and no, depending on the gun. I've got a Kel-Tec PF9 that I polished the feed ramp before having shot the first round through it. It's been very reliable. I've got a Kel-Tec P3-AT that I never touched. It's been just as reliable as the 9. 1911's can be iffy when it comes to reliably feeding JHP rounds. My two have been fine, even though their feed ramps have been untouched.

Bottom line, I'd shoot your gun first using FMJ's. Once you think it's broken in and feeding FMJ's well, I then try some JHP's. If you have problems w/ JHP's, you MIGHT consider polishing the feed ramp if it looks bad, you find GOOD instructions and you feel comfortable w/ the DIY job. Even then, I'd only polish the feed ramp by hand; I wouldn't cut the feed ramp w/ a Dremel. One other thing, I'd be REALLY hesitant to work on the feed ramp of a gun like the 1911 where the feed ramp is a part of the frame. Mess up the feed ramp and messed up the frame. It's not quite as big a problem if you foul up the feed ramp of a gun like the KT where the feed ramp is a part of the barrel.

This sounds like a pretty good approach. If I do decide to try this, it would only be on feed ramps which are part of the barrel, I wouldn't want to start messing with the frame.
