Sam Snead has legit claim to GOAT...82 PGA wins, 1 LPGA win, 14 senior wins (including 6 PGA Sr Championships), and 30 or so other professional wins (US and elsewhere). Oldest player to make the cut at a major and oldest to win on tour. Played on 7 Ryder Cup teams and Captained 3, with a record tying 6 Ryder Cup "singles" wins and an overall record of 10-2-1. 4 Cups (39, 41, 43 and 45) were cancelled in his prime or he would have played in 11. Had a gap in play due to WWII military service too. He only played in 4 British Opens, winning one and finishing 6th, 11th and missing cut (at age 64) in the others. Many other majors were cancelled during WWII, during his prime, but he still managed to win 7 regular majors, plus the 6 Sr. PGA's.

In 1962, the field consisted of Sam Snead and 14 LPGA golfers and was played over 72 holes.[5] Snead won by five strokes over Mickey Wright, making him the only man to win an official LPGA Tour event.[6]

I don't think anyone can say he is better than Jack or Tiger

Tiger is 2nd in PGA Tour Wins
2nd in Majors won
3rd in European Tour wins

He is likely to pass Snead in all time wins, and already has 7 more majors.

Tiger also has no military service, and is playing in a time where his actions are displayed like a pop stars. Tiger is great, Jack was better, but I think Snead is the whole package, and that's what it takes to be GOAT - the whole package. Put Tiger in the 30-50's or put Snead in today's time...how would fighting for his country, then winning majors be represented?

So you're discounting what Jack and Tiger did because they weren't in the military?

A few months ago when an excerpt from Haney's book saying Tiger wanted to join the SEALS came out and people said he was a dumbass and full of himself for even thinking about doing that.

We don't agree on alot, but this topic I agree.

1. Jack
2. Tiger

3. Can make an argument for several people

I'm saying it helps Snead's cause, not hurting Tiger or Jack's. We have to keep in mind that Snead played in a time when the public didn't have readily available access to him, and he wasn't portrayed as a superstar because, frankly, the technology of today didn't exist.

People always place Tiger at 1 and Jack at 2, and in my opinion it's because Tiger is constantly shoved down our throats, more so than Jack.

All I'm saying is I don't buy in to all this mumbo-jumbo hype crap.

I think you got that backwards, Jack at 1, Tiger at 2

And I think that is just something we have to live with these days, they didn't even start broadcasting the final round of the Masters in its entirety till the late 90's or early 2000's, Jack and Snead would both have had that same effect with today's technology.

Valid points though.

Amateur records have a factor as well.

Tw - 3 us amateurs and 3 junior us amateurs. 1 ncaa individual title.

Thats a complete resume.

I played with an old codger ten years ago at Querbes in Shreveport. We got to the longest par 5 hole and he said:
"I was in the gallery at a PGA event here a long time ago and I was following Sam Snead. In those days the tee box was back there against that fence and the distance to the hole was 600 yards. Sam Snead reached the green in 2 strokes."

And that was with wooden clubs.

No, I think it's because Tiger has won a ton of tournaments. I'm not a huge Tiger fan, but hype or not, the numbers don't lie. He's ahead of Snead in every menaingful category but all-time wins. He's won 74 times in 17 years. Snead won 82 times in 30 years.

Plus, Snead only played in the British Open once, I believe. He said it cost him more money than he made winning the tournament to play.

He played a lot of tournaments in Canada because they paid him apperance fees.
