LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) -- Tyrann Mathieu visited McNeese State hours after he was kicked off the team at LSU and is considering transferring to the Southland Conference school located about 200 miles from his hometown of New Orleans.

McNeese State coach Matt Viator said in a statement released by the school Saturday that he met with Mathieu on Friday. ''I received a call from Tyrann after practice on Friday that he wanted to come and meet with us,'' said Viator. ''We contacted LSU to get permission to talk to him and he arrived on campus later that night. We visited for an hour-and-a-half and then he went back home to New Orleans.''

LSU dismissed Mathieu and revoked the 20-year-old cornerback's scholarship for a violation of athletic department rules. To McNeese State's knowledge, according to the statement, Mathieu has not made a decision on where he plans to resume his college career.

McNeese State competes in FCS, the second tier of major college football, and is a traditionally one of the stronger programs in the Southland Conference. The Cowboys have never had a losing season in six seasons under Viator, reaching the FCS playoffs three times.

Mathieu can play this season if he transfers down a level from FBS to FCS. If Mathieu was to transfer to another FBS school, he would have to sit out a year to comply with NCAA rules. Lake Charles is west of New Orleans, along the Gulf Coast.

From what I understand, there's a few connections here to make this work. He's also "supposed to" visit Jackson St. and Prarie View A&M. Southern isn't considered because he wants out of Baton Rouge.

Connections that I have heard that is in MSU's favor:

-- He wants to play right away for a winner.

-- Coach Miles has said he has somewhat of a hand in the process, just not steering it. Coach Miles and Coach Viator have a good working relationship. Coach Viator and parts of his staff spent some time in Baton Rouge learning defensive schemes from Miles and crew.

-- Coach Henry was Coach Viator's OC for quite a while. Another plus.

-- Mathieu's HS DC was Delphrine Lee who is a former McNeese DB. Could be another positive recruiting pitch

I just hope Mathieu can clear his head and I'm sure Coach Viator laid down some stipulations during their visit. I hope Mathieu will accept them and begin practice soon.

I knew about this and I think Miles and Viator were on the phone before Friday.

Yes indeed.

First game is August 30th.

A Thursday night game on the road.

ETA: I'm sure you already knew that.

Why, if he uses drugsw switching schools will not change that. LSU would never have kicked him off the team if the drug use wasn't habitual. Actions have consequenses. He lost at least a million a probally more. Won't last 2 years in pros if he makes it through this season at McNeese without failing another drug test.

I don't think they cared if it was habitual or not.

Hence McNeeese

Impossible to speculate on at this point.

Also impossible to determine or speculate on.

Seems like you just want to hate on the kid here.

lol. No. I'm not hating on him at all but he, without a doubt, screwed himself out of big money at the next level. Fact.

Not if he blew out his knee or had a major injury early at LSU.

How big?

He was only project to go in the early second round a week ago.

Let's say he blows it up at McNeese and shows significant improvement in coverage skills.

How far do you really think he is going to drop?

A drop from early 2nd to maybe the late 3rd or 4 th now. Depending on how he does at mcneese. That equates to a nice little chunk of dough

Yall are deffinitly underestimating how much off the field issues are held against you pre draft.

Teams will start to look away from the film
And start looking at him getting kicked off the team and harp on that.

Plus his last big time football game will be against Alabama, arguably his worst, which will go against him as well. No matter what he does this season, his cover skill perception wont change because hes playing D2 guys.

He could fall. Far.

We shall see but it certainly didn't give him a chance to improve his draft status much.

The damage has yet to be seen, it could be a little, it could be a lot.

So much football between now and the draft.

JSU will be a better choice. JSU was the only FCS school in the MS-LA area ranked at the end of the year in the top 25. McNeese didn't even crack the top 30.

We're preseason #27.

I think last year was the first year we weren't ranked in the Top 25 in a while.
