From this afternoo's Baton Rouge Business Report

Two New Orleans developers have signed a purchase agreement for $900,000 to buy the vacant building on Old Hammond Highway that formerly housed the renowned Chalet Brandt gourmet restaurant and was more recently the site of Mandina's and, later, Another Broken Egg Café. Herb Dyer and Rusty White, who own and operate The Bulldog bars in New Orleans and on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, plan to tear down the building and redevelop the property as a high-end Mexican restaurant called The Velvet Cactus, according to the agent representing them in the sale, Mark Hebert of Kurz & Hebert Commercial Real Estate. The new restaurant will be between 3,500 and 4,500 square feet, including a patio, and will have parking in the back. That's roughly the same size as the existing structure, but it will be configured very differently and will therefore require zoning approval. "The existing building is just functionally obsolete and needs to be torn down," Hebert says. "But we're not changing the use of the property, and we hope everyone realizes what a good thing this will be for the neighborhood." This will be the second Velvet Cactus for Dyer and White; they opened their first one in the Lakeview section of New Orleans last year. Hebert expects the deal on the bank-owned building to close in about 100 days.

Place had so much potential in LV. I along with everyone I talk to think the food is pretty bad. But it has a nice bar and the place itself is cool. They need to overhaul the menu or get a new chef or something.

They use the food as an excuse to open a bar!

Yep. I knew what I saw the folks from the Bulldog were involved with the place that the food wouldn't be very good. Just like the food at the Bulldog locations and Lagers.

They are all about making $$$$ and do a damn good job at it. They seem to have gotten a lazy at getting good beer and haven't updated their menus, but their places are cool to hang out.

I'm sure they will build out a damn nice place in Baton Rouge and print $$$$.

Typical NOLA restaurant serving so-so food but getting lots of love and opening restaurants around the state.

ETA: oh and aside from the troll, the food does suck. I unfortunately went a few weeks back. The bad news is, it won't get better.

I dunno about the Velvet Cactus' food, but I think the Bulldog's food is pretty good. Not as good as the Chimes, but better than Walk-On's and similar chains. They make a decent burger.

I honestly was referred to go here by a group of people, but I had no idea of their views on food. Lesson learned.

Bulldog food>Food at other bars

It is not a restaurant, it is a bar. And their bar food is better than other bar food imo.

I've found their burgers to taste like frozen pre-made patties that are well done on incredibly dry buns.

It's amazing how many awful to mediocre food options are present in such a concentrated area of Magazine.

Well I was excited.

Now I'm depressed after reading all of your reviews.

Nah, don't be depressed. It will be a nice space and there will be hot arse there, because the women's will think it is cool.
The food is not piss poor, just not good.

Spot on. It's usually a fun place to hang out, just don't expect to be blown away by the food.

It will be a cool place to hang. The drinks will be serviceable. There will be hot girls.

The food is not bad. It's dreadful. I wanted to punch the owners in the face both times I actually ate something there.

For the money they wil spend just living on a bar won't fly in that neighborhood and that location.

And FWIW Mandinas bought the building for $1,000,000 sold it to Broken Egg Franchise for $1,600,000 after maybe two/ three years and now they sold it for $900,000.

Mandinas will be the only winner here.
