I searched and the search stinks here.

Awhile back there was a discussion on ammo manufacturers. A family member gave me a couple boxes of 9mm Federal fmj to bring a new pistol I got to the range.

What is the consensus on Federal ammo?

I probably wouldn't buy any myself, you did get it for free... What's the worst that could happen?

I shoot it through my shotgun and my deer rifle. Only reason I don't shoot it in my .22 is because I buy the cheapest I can find for that

I'm a fan of it

Is it the federal in the red box? If so, the only complaint I have is that it's real dirty.

Many thanks! I'm relatively new to this, so I don't want to screw up a new gun with junk ammo.

Yeah, it's like $10 a box at walmarks. I used to use it to mess around at the range but your hands are black once you load your clip-a-mag-a-zine. Shoots fine though.

As long as you're using brass cased ammo, it really doesn't matter what you use. Steel cased ammo is a bit hard on certain guns but brass has never hurt any since it's much softer. It'll wor fine.

It's good stuff. Slightly weaker than Blazer & Magtech --- about the same as WWB but cleaner.

Federal ammo is as good as any other. The only knock on Federal ammo is that the brass is a little soft and not really good for reloading.

That's actually not true. In comparison to others, yes it is a bit soft, but as long as you keep the pressures down in your loads (load in the low-to-mid range) then you can load them many times.

I have some cases that have been loaded probably 10 times. Granted they are getting soft, but as long as the primer seats firmly and the necks aren't split, I'm loading it.

I'm not talking about it being soft so that you need to keep pressures down. I'm talking about it being soft in that a pretty high percentage of it, compared to other brass, messes up in your dies and comes out crumpled up, dented, or otherwise damaged.

Of course it can be reloaded and being soft in the way I described has no effect on pressures and all that, it just means you have to be more careful to avoid crumpling cases and the like.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Luckily I've never had any bad failures like that in my dies. I'm using RCBS dies for 9mm and .223, and using LEE for 40 and 45. I haven't had problems with any of them but I definitely prefer the RCBS dies.

Federal makes good ammo. No worries to be had.

Used it for plinking and brass years ago, not sure what it's like now.

While we're talking ammo, I bought a box of Kent steel shells for duck with my sons advice. Just wondering if anybody had any reviews on Kent, as I haven't even heard of them?
