It's because the swoosh "reads" left to right, but when the front of the swoosh is at the front of the jersey it looks backwards. It's dumb. And needs to be fixed.

well the swoosh HAS to be that way on a damn shoe. On a jersey there's no need. It's never been backwards anywhere other than that side of the shoe.
