rate my proposed gaming pc build

I am about to place my order for my first PC build and I wanted to get some experienced builders opinions on my system. I am not out to build the be all end all gaming PC, nor am I building an OC enthusiast PC. I tried to target parts with good reviews that would give me strong gaming performance. Also, I am aware that I don't have a mechanical HD on the list. I do not have a lot of media to put on the PC and am making up for it with a larger than average SSD.

My Steam library is stored on a HDD also. Purchased a 500GB velociraptor on sale for $169 2-3weeks ago. Used to keep my steam library on a 240GB SSD but that was getting close to 70%.

I5 2500k > Intel Core i5 3570k
Ivy Bridge runs hot and has less over clocking potential.
The rest of your build looks solid.
I would go with the samsung ram though. It is the best out and cheap too. It is made using 22nm process verses 40nm from everyone else.

I've got that cooler, its huge. You need to do a little research to make sure you have room for the ram. It'll block one or two dimm slots on a lot of mother boards

Only if you are going for really ridiculous overclocks.
My 3570k is at 4.7 and rarely goes over 45deg C

Get a different case. I have the 300 and it's a pain to make cable management decent. Overall that build is pretty sexy
Eta.. Mechanical hard drives aren't expensive so you might as well grab one now. I have a 170gb of games, not counting my music, videos and pics. You can grab a 1tb for like $70
Eta2... If you aren't overclocking, save the money and get the the 2500k. I have it and it runs great

while I can't speak for his cooler, I have read that the 3570k easily gets to the 4.7-4.8 mark without major overheat problems. The issues come when you try to max it above 5.
It seems that critics of the ivy bridge think the CPUs should be able to far outdo their sandy bridge equivalents in OC, especially for the extra money one pays for ivy bridge. Is that the way you see it?
According to intel, take it for what it's worth, IB was not meant to go much further than what SB achieves as far as frequency. They say that the architecture of IB equates to faster processing at equivalent frequencies. That being said, I think the architectures of IB also lead to running a little hotter. The info I am looking at that was from when IB first came out indicates that intel doesn't advise OC past 4.8 or voltages over 1.35. Lots of people ramp their voltages up to 1.5 on SB. What kind of voltages are you pushing on your SB?
Discussion aside, this is my first build. My plan is to use this for gaming and surfing the web practically. I would like to do a pretty safe OC to about 4.5gHz with a decent air cooler, 2 stock fans, maybe another fan. Possibly add a second GPU later on. If I want to get into a heavy OC, SLI, true liquid cooling I know that I am gonna to need a completely different setup for that.

thanks for the heads up. Looks like it may block the dimm slot nearest the cpu. one forum said yes, then I watched a youtube vid of a guy putting ram in all four dimm and then installing the heatsink with no problem. Either way, I am going with 8x2 at this point so blocking a slot wouldn't be a total catastrophe.
BTW, think I should maybe scale back to 4x2?

Thermalright Macho 2 with dual fans. It is MASSIVE. It just touches the door of the case when it is shut.

No reason to scale back the ram if you get the Samsung ram like I suggested earlier. It is the best ram out. It is the only ram using 28nm processing technology. It is so good that it runs cool to the touch with no heat sinks and overclocked.
It is also low profile so it will fit under any heat sink on the market.

tender you never said what cpu/cooling unit you had. could you also tell me to what freq and voltage you clocked it and your temps? thanks

If you are looking to save a couple of bucks, sure. 8 gigs of dual channel ram is all you will ever use under most circumstances. Not to mention you already have 2 gigs of gaming ram on the vid card. I'm using 2x4GB of kingston hyper v and have never even come close to using it all.
Personally, I'd take whatever money you save on going from 16 to 8 and apply it to replacing your dvd player with a blue ray if so inclined.

I don't own any BLuray disks or plan on buying any. Maybe I'll take that extra money into a case with better cable mgmt.
Do y'all use dedicated monitors or just use a small HDTV?

You can find cases cheaper than the 300 that are better, but it's not a terrible case at all. It's just the cable management is pretty tricky. You will probably need an HD Audio cord extension and a USB extension because I needed them. I'll post up some pics of what my insides look like to give you a better idea

FWIW this is the case I have for my gaming build...it's got some nice features. One of which is both sides fold down and the mobo sits on a removable tray...makes everything a lot easier in general. Also I like the huge window which proves that they are NOT all pink on the inside...plus it has blue LED's, which my monitors, keyboard, and mouse have as well
