Badfinger at the Paramount Theatre, Springfield Mass (February 3, 1972)

One of the great bands of their time, in concert the star-crossed Badfinger curiously stressed bar band covers (including not one but two by Dave Mason) rather than the power pop that made their reputation, and for which they are so fondly remembered today.

Still, a little Badfinger is better than none.

Judee Sill at USC (1973)

The ill-fated Judee Sill (1944-1979) is remembered today mostly for writing and singing the classic "Jesus Was A Crossmaker" (1971). Despite her considerable talent, personal problems kept her from capitalizing on the singer-songwriter boom of the '70s.

This is rather primitive footage of a show she put on at the USC campus -- primitive but priceless, since so little footage exists of her performing.

The Kinks In Concert at the BBC (1973)

The band just a wee bit past their Golden Age, but still a great show. The undisputed highlight is "The Village Green Preservation Society", complete with horn section -- the old-fashioned brass gives the song a special, nostalgic quality.

Set list

00:00 - “Victoria”
02:54 - “Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues”
06:21 - “Dedicated Follower of Fashion”
08:16 - “Lola”
13:03 - “Holiday”
15:55 - “Good Golly Miss Molly”
18:44 - “You Really Got Me”
20:43 - “All Day And All Of the Night”
22:05 - “Waterloo Sunset”?
25:43 - “The Village Green Preservation Society”

The Velvet Underground - Live 1969, Vol.01

Vol.02

quote:

In 1969 a VU fan who was a recording engineer brought a reel-to-reel tape machine to two shows the band played during an engagement at a club in Dallas called The End of Cole Avenue; a few months later, the band played The Matrix in San Francisco, where a tape machine had been installed into the hall's sound system, and the band was allowed to record their set. Five years later, long after The Velvet Underground had collapsed and Lou Reed's solo career was on the rise, Mercury Records compiled highlights of the Dallas and San Francisco tapes into a two-record set, 1969: Velvet Underground Live, and it is without question the best (legally-released) document of this band's considerable strengths as a live act. While they were a somewhat more sedate band with Doug Yule on bass rather than Cale, they still had plenty of life left in them at this stage of the game; there are few voyages into the sonic unknown here, but Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison had matured into one of rock's most potent guitar combinations, Maureen Tucker was as distinctive a drummer as anyone who picked up a pair of mallets, and with Doug Yule at her side they comprised a truly superb rhythm section. Sounding tight, confident, and passionate on every cut, this set finds the band visiting highlights from all four of their studio albums, as well as a handful of previously unreleased numbers. From the delicacy of "New Age" and "I'll Be Your Mirror" to the rave-up energy of "What Goes On" and "White Light/White Heat," 1969: Velvet Underground Live captures the many sides of their musical personality with commendable skill, and while it isn't their best album, it's one of the best places for a beginner to explore their body of work. == Allmusic

The Sound of Jazz (CBS-TV, December 8, 1957)

quote:

"The Sound of Jazz" is a 1957 edition of the CBS television series Seven Lively Arts, and was one of the first major programs featuring jazz to air on American network television.
quote:

"The Sound of Jazz" brought together 32 leading musicians from the swing era including Count Basie, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Jo Jones and Coleman Hawkins; the Chicago style players of the same era, like Henry "Red" Allen, Vic Dickenson, and Pee Wee Russell; and younger 'modernist' musicians such as Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk, and Jimmy Giuffre.
quote:

The show's performance of "Fine and Mellow" reunited Billie Holiday with her estranged long-time friend Lester Young for the final time. Jazz critic Nat Hentoff, who was involved in the show, recalled that during rehearsals, they kept to opposite sides of the room. Young was very weak, and Hentoff told him to skip the big band section of the show and that he could sit while performing in the group with Holiday.

During the performance of "Fine and Mellow", Webster played the first solo. "Then", Hentoff remembered:

quote:

Lester got up, and he played the purest blues I have ever heard, and [he and Holiday] were looking at each other, their eyes were sort of interlocked, and she was sort of nodding and half–smiling. It was as if they were both remembering what had been—whatever that was. And in the control room we were all crying. When the show was over, they went their separate ways.

Within two years, both Young and Holiday had died.

I'm surprised that no one has posted a Zeppelin concert on here yet. Their shows were a lot more improvisational than what I expected the first time I heard one of their live shows.

Here is one from 1970 at Albert Hall:

26:09 White Summer (Page)
38:32 What Is and What Should Never Be (Page, Robert Plant)
43:11 How Many More Times (John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Page)
1:03:28 Moby Dick (Bonham, Jones, Page)
1:18:49 Whole Lotta Love (Bonham, Dixon, Jones, Page, Plant)
1:25:13 Communication Breakdown (Bonham, Jones, Page)

Eat The Document (1966)

quote:

Eat the Document is a documentary of Bob Dylan's 1966 tour of the United Kingdom with the Hawks. It was shot under Dylan's direction by D. A. Pennebaker, whose groundbreaking documentary, Don't Look Back, chronicled Dylan's 1965 British tour. The film was originally commissioned for the ABC television series Stage '66.

Eat the Document includes footage from the infamous Manchester Free Trade Hall concert, wherein an audience member shouted "Judas!" during the electric half of Dylan's set. Dylan's band during these shows were The Hawks (later to become The Band).
[NOTE: The drummer is Mickey Jones (formerly with Trini Lopez and Johnny Rivers, later with The First Edition), not Levon Helm.]

Short documentary about The Manchester Free Trade Hall concert (May 17, 1966).
