Start your own thread this one is mine.

This guy has put on the weight since coming to LSU. I don't think he has really gotten a lot of playing time at DE over the years and I was wondering could he go inside and get in the DT rotation.

I know he had the injury.

Complete bust. Last year he had three assisted tackles on the season with two against Northwestern State. This is his last year unless he somehow is granted a 5th year. With the depth we have at DE there is nothing to see here...

I wouldn't say complete bust because he was a total risk/project after his injury in HS.

This plus I believe he only started playing football in the 9th grade. Had no experience or technique... just was bigger than the other kids.

You either don't watch games or have a short memory. Last year he didn't get to play much because of depth and nagging injuries, but he was a solid contributor the two years before when we needed him. Calling somebody a complete bust without considering all factors is ignorance at its best.

Miles has proven that if he can help the team he will use him in some capacity

The glue of most teams are players like that who are unselfish and work for the betterment of the team.

He could have easily bolted by now and played at some lower level team but I for one, applaud a guy, who sticks it out and will have that senior day in probably his last football season as a player.

He doesn't get tons of tackles because he plays against the weak side. He is not run at very often. It is like judging a DT on sacks. He was a decent contributor as a Soph. Was hurt last year.

Aside from the other points made by board posters critical of this assessment, I'll add this: He wasn't an extremely productive HS player. In that regard, he was looked at as a guy with "upside" more than a sure bet.

If a guy who's not a sure bet contributes during most of his four-year career, that's not a bust. If you think he was a bust, you have an inflated expectation of him.

Now, if Montgomery goes down and Agheyere got to start because of it and has a productive season, that wouldn't shock me. But I never thought he was a can't-miss guy either.

You realize that just because someone on LSUs team isn't a 1st team all american or Heisman finalist that doesn't mean he was a bust.

No. If you followed his recruitment you would know that he was a risk/reward type after a knee injury in high school. He never regained his trademark explosiveness, but he has been a contributer for several years now.

RS freshman year-Recorded 12 tackles, 2.0 tackles for losses and one sack against Vanderbilt, Louisiana-Lafayette and Mississippi State.
I will admint his sophomore stats suprised me
quote:

SOPHOMORE SEASON (2010)
Played in 12 games, starting twice - vs. Florida and McNeese State ... Saw most of his action at left defensive end ... Finished year with 21 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup ... Had four tackles, including one tackle for a 1-yard loss in win over Florida ... Added a tackle for a loss in season-opening win over North Carolina ... Tied a career-best with five tackles in win over Tennessee ... Closed regular season with three tackles vs. Arkansas

I guess I just did not recall him having that productive of a 3rd year, thus I will retract my statement that he was a COMPLETE BUST, but to say he wasn't a highly recruited player or a "risk" even post injury isn't legit. IMO, he hasn't come close to living up to expectation. Not knocking the guy, I guess i just expected a lot more than most of you.

Knew he was a scouting service darling, but sometimes you have to get off the scouting service sites to know what's going on. And I didn't realize those numbers were being thrown out there. Don't think they are legit.

I have friends from out there who were questioning his ranking the whole time. Read this thread to get an idea of what they were thinking:

LINK

Big difference between what Rivals and Scout were saying and what people who followed Garland were saying. They looked at him as an "upside" player who was not extremely productive and did not dominate in high school. He would disappear in games against good 5A teams. You see it all in there.

I suspect he camped well though.

To get back to your original question, I'd ask this: Why?

To me, LSU is four deep in tackles I'd feel good about: Logan, Downs, Johnson, Ferguson. And it's four deep with ends I'd feel good about: Mingo, Montgomery, Edwards and Aghayere.

Why would you hurt your end depth to bolster an already sufficiently deep position? If a couple of tackles go down, then maybe. Otherwise, why?
