6" catfish in pond surface feeding

Beginning at the start of the summer, I began to notice dozens upon dozens of small catfish surface feeding at any given time in the pond near our place.
I was wondering if anybody knew what kind of catfish these are, what they're feeding on exactly, and if they get big enough to have some fun with in a year or two? thanks

They may be coming up to get oxygen. Can't say I've seen catfish do this, but it's a possibility if the water gets too hot and anaerobic.

I see catfish 'eating the surface' whenever the oxygen content in low in the water

Probably the case, considering they're constantly skimming the surface. The complex shut off our fountain at the beginning of the summer 
and a large amount of algae and hydrilla have taken over the lake. thanks

Definitely a case of low oxygen. I've seen catfish do this on multiple occasions. Always in low water.

Were they black? I've seen this often "out in the wild" like canals, crawfish lakes, etc. They're mud cats, I assume.

I have seen catfish at top of water eating insects under lights before
