Growing up, listening to WWL, he was the best radio announcer ever. Anybody else remember the good old days?

that was all i knew for a long time, and the roar of tiger stadium in the background was unequaled. every saturday was like listening to war - i thought ferguson was great, you knew he was on your side but i was very fair in his analysis

I enjoyed John Ferguson but he did not compare to Jack Kristal at Mississippi State or Larry Munson at Georgia.

That's not putting Ferguson down either, these guys were head and shoulders better than anyone in the SEC.

maybe they were better but they didn’t have the same backdrop of Saturday night in the Roar of Tiger Stadium. There was no other show that could compare

I became a Tiger fan listening to Ferguson call the Ole Miss game where Bert Jones threw the last second TD pass. My dad was driving and he was so excited that he drove the car off of the road screaming GEAUX TIGERS!!!!!!!

Been a Tiger fan ever since!

Larry Munson was so biased he couldn't even call a decent game. There is a diference in getting a little excited and sounding retarded when you are calling big plays..

he had a great voice for radio, but I thought he was an aawful play-by-play announcer. Way too slow with his delivery. I remember so many times I would hear the crowd roar and it took another 5 seconds for Ferguson to describe what happened. That being said, I have fond memories of listening to Tiger games on the radio as a kid back when we always played night games and very few were on TV. But, let's be honest, the guy wasn't good.

I have to agree about Munson. He was hard to listen to and very unprofessional in my opinion with his extreme bias. Definitely NOT one of the better ones in my opinion.

Its all subjective I suppose but nearly every "all-time best college play-by-play list" includes Larry Munson. The Big Ten has excellent play-by-play men but Munson was the best in the SEC. Again, its all subjective.

Late 60's to late 70's was the golden era for great radio play by play men. I was lucky enough to hear all 3 of these and would love for LSU to get an announcer anywhere near the caliber of these 3.

I loved hearing John Ferguson call an LSU game in Tiger Stadium. Hawthorne doesnt even compare!

Outside of Larry Munson and Jack Cristal the SEC hasn't had great announcers in my lifetime. Ferguson was on his way out when I first started to pay close attention to LSU football. My father was a huge fan of Ferguson and still mimics an old Ferguson standard " quarterback hands off to nobody". My father claims John would make that call 20 times a game.

My dad's favorite Ferguson call.....

He's hit at 10 and falls foward to the 27!!!

He was all the time bitching about JF. I loved the dude, but it probably had more to do with the fact that that's what I grew up listening to.

I can remember SO many nights of sitting around listening to LSU in the 70's. 'Bout like the Waltons listening to FDR.

I grew up close to BR, and turned 15 in 1981, so as soon as I got my license, my buddies and me would tell my parents we were going to a party or something, and instead, buy us some Dixie and head off to BR with no tickets. We always got in the game though.

I was born & raised in SW La and I recall listening to Ferguson & Walter Hill in the late '50s, early 60's, and I think they were still announcing when I moved to CO in the early '70s.
