How in the hell did only 6 out of 20 die? LINK

And how great of a name is Artimus Pyle?

quote:

Meanwhile, aboard N55VM, Billy Powell would recall his experiences in an interview with Rolling Stone in November of 1977, “We had decided the night before that we would definitely get rid of the plane in Baton Rouge. So we started partying to celebrate the last flight on it. The right engine started sputtering, and I went up to the cockpit. The pilot said they were just transferring oil from one wing to another, everything's okay. Later, the engine went dead. Artimus [Pyle] and I ran to the cockpit. The pilot was in shock. He said, 'Oh my God, strap in.' Ronnie [Van Zant] had been asleep on the floor and Artimus got him up and he was really pissed. We strapped in and a minute later we crashed. The pilot said he was trying for a field, but I didn't see one. The trees kept getting closer, they kept getting bigger. Then there was a sound like someone hitting the outside of the plane with hundreds of baseball bats. I crashed into a table; people were hit by flying objects all over the plane. Ronnie was killed with a single head injury. The top of the plane was ripped open. Artimus crawled out the top and said there was a swamp, maybe alligators. I kicked my way out and felt for my hands -- they were still there. I felt for my nose and it wasn't, it was on the side of my face. There was just silence. Artimus and Ken Peden and I ran to get help Artimus with his ribs sticking out.”

My dad still has the ticket for the skynyrd show that they were heading to when the plane crashed. No telling what that thing could be worth now.

The Skynyrd "Behind the Music" was one of the most interesting IMO.

Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash

One of the worst days of my youth. I was sitting in Evironmental Science class and read about it in the paper. I went home for the rest of the day and just sobbed. Agreat Great band that were takin too soon.

I lived in Hatcher that year as well. Kind of stupid that we weren't allowed to have alcohol in our rooms, but you could get drunk in the basemant.

Me and a buddy used to hang out at around the pool at the Oak Manor hotel. The afternoon of the crash we were out there as was a bunch of guys who we later found out was the band Point Blank. They were scheduled to play warm-up for the Skynyrd concert. We hung out and drank a few beers with them. Cool guys, they gave us both a free ticket to the show. I few hours later as I got home it was on the news the plane had crashed.

Young, dumb, drunk and stupid as I was back then. Me and my buddy returned our free tickets and got tickets for Emerson, Lake and Palmer a week later.

Grandfather worked at Enterprise-Journal in McComb and the front page is somewhere in all of his stuff. Older folks still talk about that crash around there.
