So, my buddy thinks he died, and that was Alfred's dream.
It never even crossed my mind that it was open to interpretation. I thought he was alive.
What'd everyone else think?

Given Alfred's emotional speech, this thought has crossed my mind, because it was what Alfred always wanted to see.
ETA: Although it was a nice loop hole that Bruce fixed the Auto-Pilot on The Bat well in advance of the bomb scene apparently.

I think your buddy isn't funny.
We were worried that Nolan would end it as Alfred looked up and smiled and we wouldn't see what he was looking at though.

My thought was though....he fixed the autopilot. So you if you think he's dead, you also must believe he purposely committed suicide.

The only question is "where the frick did he go when he bailed?"

Apparently, this is a serious thought people are having.
I guess before Bruce started working on disarming the nuke he went and fixed the bat signal, left a package for Robin, and fixed the autopilot for shits and giggles.
If you think it was a dream, you're trying WAY too hard.

Yeah...despite what others may think I believe he survived and went on to have another life, a clean slate with Selina. That's the ending I want to believe and the ending, at least in my opinion, Nolan intended to be "real."

There would've been no point showing the subtle ways he let Fawkes, Gordon, and Blake know that he was still alive if he was actually dead.

I can live with that. Besides, it wouldn't be a Nolan movie without an Open-Ending.
And I'm fine with JGL taking over as Batman in the future, especially if it's in a Justice League movie.

I totally agree, however my buddy says Gordon fixed the bat signal in memory of batman and alfred left the package for Robin. No comeback to why the autopilot was fixed.
