The rumor was fan support for Goku. Either the fans weren't happy about Goku being replaced by Gohan or the producers thought that Gohan might not be as successful. Either way it was Toriyama being forced to change his mind after he was already in the process of making the transition of the main protagonist of the series.

I think that I would have been fine if they had simply let gohan develop into a bad arse that is a little less stable than Goku and cut out all of that great saiyaman crap while letting goku fade a little more.
