Why is Drew Brees worth a blank check?

Drew Brees has done more for this organization than anyone else outside the owners and coaches. He is going to go down as one of the all-time greats to ever put on a New Orleans Saints uniform and he still has five or more years left. He will be a first ballot NFL HOF'er.

Now for the numbers:

NFL Records - 56 (Marino has 8, Brady has 42, Manning has 59)
New Orleans Saints records - 30

Only QB in history to surpass 5,000 yards in a single season twice

First player to have more than one season with 400 completions. He has gone on to do it four times now. (07,08,10,11)

Let's not forget the consecutive games with a TD pass record that he is still currently on - 43 straight games, the record is 47.

Fastest QB ever to reach 40,000 yards passing

Only person to ever be Outback Bowl MVP (NCAA), Alamo Bowl MVP (NCAA), and Super Bowl MVP

66% Career Completion Percentage. SICK!!!

If he was playing by himself, then I would agree that he'd be worth a blank check.

Without him, we don't win a third of the games over the past 6 years. FACT!

He's worth it

I'm not saying we don't need him, but I don't want Loomis signing him to a deal that'll cripple the team in terms of retaining/signing players.

True but the problem is if we don't, the one year tag will cripple us even worse

Problem is, where do you draw the line? Would he be worth 6 years 150 million? I mean where would we be without him right?

The Saints are trying not to end up like Indy. Hall of Fame QB eating up a huge chunk of your cap and now you have shitty defense, and not enough money down the road to keep key players.

We are offering 19.25 mil if I remember correctly and he wants 20.5 mil....he is essentially holding out for a 1.00% increase in pay from what is already the most money anyone to ever play in the NFL would make. That's like someone making 30k per year, getting a raise to 70k per year, holding out of work for 700 extra dollars a year. (under 30 cents an hour after taxes).

I get it's chump change and we could just as easily say the Saints should pay him, but they've bellied up to the bar, offered the biggest contract in NFL HISTORY, and Brees scoffs over what will amount to nothing for him after taxes.

Cost benefit analysis drew. It's not worth it.

The tag this year wouldn't be a problem.

I agree he needs to get paid, but for fricks sake they aren't low balling his arse.

Either way, things like this go to the deadline.

Says who?

That is the other problem we are facing, "inside" sources being reported by TP writers. Not sure who to believe anymore.

I wonder where the actual truth is behind the reports of the contract.

LINK

So it was 19.2 mil, I was off a tiny bit. I initially heard this on ESPN radio via Matt Moscona.

I get that as a player you have a finite career that doesnt last as long as most, so you have to get what you can NOW, but with endorsements, Jimmy Johns (billions right there lol), and a NINE figure contract for the next 5-6 years....I don't think it's worth all the trouble it's causing to hold out for what he's asking for.

I agree with this 100%. I wonder how much of this is his agent and how much is him/Saints.

I also agree 100%. This is his last contract and I see the concern that he wants what he deserves. There's a thin line between one or the other. This is a very important season though. And something needs to give. I still have confidence that it will. We as fans don't know shite about the inner gears of this stuff but damn......I hope this all works out.

What it leads to is a decision to be made by Drew Brees which he has apparently already said he won't show if he doesn't get a deal.

The long term affects of signing him and having to deal with signing other players in the future >>>>>> him not coming back to play for the Saints because we couldn't pony up the cash and then have to deal with the backlash from the fans that would not understand the specific reasons why we didn't get a deal done. Not to mention, the fans would stop showing, I promise. The Dome will get very quiet, the money will start to dissapear, and the Saints will be back in the late 90's, early 00's again. Remember then?

Which is why fans won't come to the games if he doesn't sign a long term deal. It is ashame but it seems that the smartest motherfrickers in sports that have an understanding of it all are the posters in TD.

People are still gonna go to the games even if Brees doesn't sign.

They will at first. But after 8 losses, the bandwagon fans will start to leave.

I will be there every fricking game however!

And in Denver too! CANT WAIT FOR THAT TRIP!!!!

From what I've heard what the Saint's have offered him has been more than fair. If he were to not sign and hold out, then I would be frustrated with the FO but mad at Brees.
