NFL Salary Cap Question

I know that if you sign a player you can spread the signing bonus over the length of the contract so the first season doesn't have an epic cap hit. Also if you cut that player the rest of the signing bonus automatically is due that season or the next and can put a dent in your cap.
My question is what if the player retires? Do you still have to pony up the rest of the bonus to the next available cap or is the team relieved of the burden since the player retired?
I know it's probably a stupid question, but someone asked me and I wasn't sure.

Not only is the team is off the hook, but the player actually would have to write a check to the team. Signing bonuses are typically paid up front (or sometimes spread out over the first two years of the deal). So if player X signs a 5 year deal with a $10m signing bonus, the cap hit is $2m/yr, and the player gets paid the money fairly quickly. If they retire in year 3, they can keep the $4m, but they have to pay back the $6m to the team, and the team will be off the hook for the player's entire contract.
I don't know of any player ever retiring with a significant amount of guaranteed money reamaining in the deal, though. The only thing close to this was Vick going to prison.

It would make sense that they forfeit the signing bonus if they don't play anymore.

Not really. Technically its a bonus for signing the contract, not for playing
