Software and even accessories fell for a sixth consecutive month in May, tumbling 28% from a year earlier to $517 million. And with the release of Blizzard's (ATVI) Diablo III, May also saw the first time since July 2010 that the top-selling game was a PC-only title. That boosted PC video games sales up year-over-year to 230% or $80 million.

This spring graphics card maker Nvidia (NVDA) released a new cutting edge GTX 680 GPU that could spur a new wave of game development. "Toward the tail of the console life cycle, the gap between console and PC is just too big for developers to ignore," Nvidia spokesman Bryan Del Rizzo told Fortune.

I think distribution platforms like Steam have really had an impact on these figures as well.

No good console games out since February.

Diablo III was the only decent title drop of the 2012 summer, so of course those numbers are gonna be skewed in PC's favor.

Also, D3 sucked dick.

It's the only game you heard of. And I doubt that one game skewed the numbers that much.

If you would pay attention around here, there have been quite a "building a PC" threads, which IMO, supports the point of the article: PC gaming making a comeback. I'm not bashing console gaming at all, but I think people are starting to get over their hangups about PC gaming.

I don't

but regardless, all the consoles are at the end of their life cycles, while lots of great PC components have come out in the last year or so (ivy bridge processors, geforce 680 chips, etc)

so people are building computers that make their consoles look like Amigas and buying the games for the PC instead.

I agree, the prices for really good components that outclass consoles has really swung in the consumers favor lately. I've always had a gaming PC and I'm glad to see so many other joining in.

You doubt the quickest-selling PC games of all time would skew the numbers (never said by how much)?!

PC gaming is going to attract the more hardcore crowd with the next generation of consoles. Nintendo has already announced they are less-focused on the legacy titles of yester-year and are spending more time on developing a console that will meet all of the entertainment needs of the consumer. Think PC for dummies hooked up to your television instead of a monitor...

I powered it up really quick the other day just to see if it would work, and I already know I'm going to have to spend a night just figuring out the controls. Default settings weren't intuitive at all.

Just seemed like you were attributing all of it to D3. I'll admit that it definitely made an impact.

I'll agree with a few posters here and say that Steam is a big part of the rise.

It's basically a piece of software that come with most games nowadays, or you can download it. Its what you use to play said games online, it also gives you access to downloadable content and other games you wouldn't normally hear alot about in the mainstream. Keep in mind that I have never used it, it's just what I have picked up from seeing it.

Digital download site with most games both new and old with good prices, daily deals sometimes 75% off and in the summer and christmas they have mega sales with most games discounted. They also have a ton of indi titles.

They just announced that they are going to let the users be part of the process in deciding which games they will sell.

Simply put, it's on online store for computer games which allows you to never buy a box again.

But really, it's a program for your computer that connects you to a community, allows you to keep and update games automatically, has free and paid for downloadable content, user-creation tools and markets, and awesome awesome sales.

Easily the biggest catalog of games online, and makes it neat and manageable in your computer. It also lets you upload saved games to the cloud, which is a nice touch. For SOME games, this means you can play between multiple computers and never lose progress.
