I was at the game a decade later than Nebraska won 21-20 I believe. Great game even though we lost...

here's the recap:LINK /

Nebrasca did a great job in shutting down Dalton Hilliard for most of the game, but he almost broke some long ones.

The loss to A&M was a last minute loss with a hail mary type of pass.

Defender (can't recall who) just slipped and A&M reciever ran like 70 yds untouched for the winner! Was a totally flukish ending but it was what it was! ND game was a classic that Ara P always said was his favorite win because intense defense battle! At least we beat Gumps over there (2 in a row was unheard of vs Bear at the time)!

I believe it was Paul Lyons, who was actually a QB but was for some reason inserted as DB.
Mac was always doing stupid stuff like that though.

And some geniuses thought it'd be a good idea to have fake grass in an outdoor stadium in Miami of all places. Watching old film with outdoor stadiums using astroturf makes me cringe. In HS we played against Natch Central in Turchin, dear god I hate astroturf.

It actually was Paul Lyons whot at the time was a DB and only a DB after that season was converted to QB.

As for the LSU-Nebraska Orange bowl in 83 I have a story. Around 2001 was transferred to a small Nebraska town and later that season was when LSU beat Tenn in the SEC championship game and sent Nebraska with Eric Crouch to the NC game. At the time Nebraska fans loved LSU and got to talking to my sales rep about LSU Neb games. The 71 Orange Bowl and 76 6-6 tie and 83 Orange Bowl as well as 86 if I remember correctly Sugar Bowl. As we were discussing 83 Orange Bowl he mentioned what a great game it was and then asked me if I knew Dave Remington played on that team. I said yea in fact going into that game all we kept hearing was how he had never missed a play that season when a game was within 21 points or some stat like that basically he had played every meaningful play in every game. He said yea that's right and I said until that bowl game that is Ramsey Dardar LSU's nose guard kicked Remington's arse and midway through the 3rd quarter you will see the Nebraska offense on the field and Remington on the sidelines sucking oxygen and LSU is still winning the game at that point, not to mention if you watch the center noseguard play you will see Dardar beating Remington all nite long.

He claimed a friend of his had it on VHS and I was full of it. I told him I would bet $100 bucks against the tape of the game if Remington isnt sucking oxygen in the 3rd while the Ne offense is on the field. Long story short the tape couldnt be found despite being told prior to my comment that they watched that tape all the time in the offseason.

I watched the 71 game with my dad I was 11 never forgot Bert Jones fumbled or missed a pitch late in the game.

I watched the 82 game LSU was driving late when hilliard fumbled. I think we were in field goal range. That was the year we went to Bamma and beat the Bear.( watched the bamma game in the superdome
it was ten dolars they showed the game on the old screens).

Both Bert Jones and Hilliard were great players just not perfect. No one is.

No one is perfect but I will take a Bert Jones and a Dalton Hilliard on any LSU team anytime anywhere.

Thanks bdnc for the post.

Few rambling thoughts:
a) Nebraska seemed like a whole generation bigger than us but made a lot of mistakes. We couldn't pass protect against them.
b) John Sage (#73) and Andy Hamilton (#80) played great.
c) Didn't know bands were allowed to produce noise while the play clock was running but you could clearly hear this on several plays.
d) Wonder if replay would've overturned the fumble on Nebraska's winning TD drive?

Three observations: Charlie Mac made some of the worst coaching decisions of all time. Down 10-0 deep in Nebraska territory at the end of the first half, he leaves the field goal on the board instead of going for it on 4th and six inches. In 1967 at Tennessee, LSU was deep in UT terrritory with about 20 seconds to go in the game down by 3. On third down, McClendon chose to play for a tie and tried a field goal, ON THIRD DOWN! We missed and lost the game. How he got away with that stuff is beyond me. Finally, did you notice near the end of the first half that Mike was standing on the sidelines without his head on?

Compared to today, there was almost zero scrutiny for a head coach back then.

great games and seasons back then but could never get over that "hump" into the Nat. Title scenerio

The "hump" was the same one we face today..."Bama"! Although Miles has done much better against Saban than Coach Mac did against the Bear.

Great game....remember watching with my dad. The ones I remember the most and knew personally were Cantrell and Mike Anderson. I would not have fought Cantrell with a baseball bat in each hand and Anderson was just as tuff. He worked out at the same gym we did in HS (early 70's).

That was the '70 opener. Butch Duhe had suddenly passed away of a brain hemorrhage the week before.
LSU was heavily favored over A&M but played with heavy hearts.
Still, LSU led 18-13 with seconds left, when A&M QB Lex James through the hail mary to Carl Roaches. LSU DBs slipped and fell down after mistimed jump and Roaches snagged it and ran for the winning TD. Only other losses that year were 3-0 at Notre Dame and 17-12 in Orange to #1 Nebraska.
One of my favorite LSU games of all time was that year - 61-17 over Ole Miss on Dec. 5 for the SEC title, our first since '61. It was on ABC Prime time with Chris Schenkel and Lee Grosscup.

LSU vs. Nebraska 1971 Orange Bowl
It's obvious that LSU has been a much more "relevant" national title contender since 2000 than in previous eras. Why are we even arguing about this?

And how exactly is it "obvious" ???????
*So 1935-36 just NEVER happened?
*How about the 16 year period from 1958-73 when LSU finished in the Top Ten about 8 times, averaged about 9 wins a year and went to a bowl game just about ever year?
*1982?
*1984-88? Including 1987 when we finished 5th in the nation!
*1996-97?

What team are you a fan of ?????????

Thanks for posting this! I loved watching it last night on my big screen tv just as if I was watching it as a kid. My nostalgic side also wanted to see some of the old commercials from back then, but I'm actually glad it was all nicely edited as it made for easy viewing.
