AR15 for hunting?

I have some friends with AR-15's and I've enjoyed shooting them. I'd love to have a gun that I could shoot for fun but could also maybe deer hunt with. Would the .223 be OK or 5.56? Also should I skip the AR altogether and look for an AK. I'm not a huge collector or hunter but like a little of both.
TIA
TIA

People have killed deer with it.
No way in hell I'd use it unless I had to though.
ETA: You could get an AR-10 (an AR-15 in .308win) or a springfield M1A if you want a combat style deer rifle.

Any idea of the price difference in the gun?

Idk about the price of AR10's. You don't see many of them advertised and I've never shopped for them.
Springfield M1A's are expensive. Somewhere around $1700.
You could also look at the FN SCAR heavy. Another .308 combat rifle.

If you've got the money, you can buy an AR with any caliber you want. Changing uppers is a simple procedure. 300 blackout would be a fun caliber and would kill anything you want to.

Are the AR10's as customizable as the AR 15? I know I have alot of questions just trying to get some info from people who know!

Anything you can do to a AR15 you can do to a AR10

I like this LR 8 in .308 by Rock River. It is on my wish list.

I bought a DPMS LR 308 AR10 from Walmart for $887. Very basic AR that comes with 2 clips. Dressed it up with Leopold rifleman 3x9x40 scope. Adding a quad rail system this weekend. Sweet shooting weapon with very little recoil. I'm planning to use it to deer hunt this fall using Hornady 168 grain BT VLDs. Weapon loves them. Patterns within an inch at 100 yds even with me shooting it. Freind who shoots long range alot shot less than 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds. I think he actually put several through same holes in target. Very accurate weapon.

I would think stepping up to at least the 6.8spc or 6.5 grendel.

I'm building a 6.8 spc and it should be a good deer round but I'm not a deer hunter.

Unless you are 8 please don't shoot a deer with a .223. Glad you asked though, you can actually get some good advice off of this board.

ArmaLite makes an AR-10 in .260 Remington.

DPMS makes several guns on an AR platform in hunting calibers. 243, 6.8, 260, 308, and even a 338. I wouldn't use the 223 for whitetail. It can kill them, but I'd recommend more gun.
