I have twin yamaha 250 ox66's on a 30 ft boat. This past weekend when we would hit a wave in a headsea (pretty big wave), the port motor would suddenly lose power - from 3500 down to 1700ish rpms right at impact, and then it immediately picks back up to 3500. My guess is that the motor actually goes all the way to 0 rpms, but it picks back up so quickly that the tach doesn't register it.

From some reading that I've down, this sounds like the screen in the VST tank needs to be cleaned, but are there any other possibilities?

Were you in an oceanmaster by any chance? They were having the same problems but it was mostly bad fuel

Clean your filter located on the bottom of the High Pressure Fuel Pump inside the VST. Also replace all three of your low pressure fuel pumps.

Nope not us. Unless you were on the boat you wouldn't have known that we were having an issue. It was only happening when we would hit a larger wave and was so quick that we wouldn't lose any speed.

sounds electrical to me... if it was fuel, I dont think it would be so immediate. I would check all the connections for corrosion or loose connections..

Good luck....great motors by the way..

It's not electrical. If you want to verify, tie in a fuel pressure gauge at the shrader valve on the VST. If you don't hold 35 PSI, you have a fuel related issue that I talked about.

These are fuel injected motors. If you are not getting proper pressure to the fuel rails, the motor will lose power instantly as described.

This was my first thought while on the water. After doing some reading/research it sounds like it could be the VST Filter, but I'm not throwing electrical out the window yet.

Yes, I love them. Very strong and haven't given me any issues (until this of course).
