Emergency Room Medical Bill - Anything I can do about it?

2 weekends ago I came home from the bar and tripped over something and smashed my face against the nightstand. I got a pretty good gash right under my lip and had to go to the emergency room.

They gave me 5 stitches, a tetanus shot, and I was on my way. I was there for 3 hours, tops, and most of the time consisted of me just sitting there watching tv waiting on a doctor.

I have insurance, but I have a $1000 deductible since I'm in pretty good health and don't expect many hospital visits. My insurance plan won't pay anything towards emergency room visits until after the deductible is met.

The bill came in and it is over 2200 dollars (!!) so I am basically having to pay 1000 bucks out of pocket for 5 fricking stitches. Is there any way I can fight this? This seems EXTREMELY expensive for just 5 stitches.

No ... pay it ... get with the business office to work out a payment plan if you need to. I look at it this way, you're covered for the rest of the year.

But yes, the prices are outrageous.

Can't fight it. I would suggest getting an HSA account for things like this coming up in the future.

Before tax contributions, can be used for medical bills and procedures.

Also good advice.

You should've grown some balls and just super glued that shite. That's what I do. Just clean it out good and slap on some glue. Done

I think that this is going away with the new healthcare bill. Sucks. I like my HSA!

You can always file an appeal with your insurance company. BUT, using the reason, "I didn't buy enough coverage and now I don't want to pay the bills I racked up" usually gets denied.

Set up a payment plan with the hospital, and next time go to a charity hospital.

BTW graduating college and before I could find a job with health benefits, I had to go to the emergency room for my appendix. Went to Earl K. and besides sharing a room with prisoners the care I received was A+ and didn't pay a dime.

any emergency room trip will always cost over $1,000...it is ridiculous but it is what it is. you got the coverage so it is on you

but like someone said, the business office will usually work out a payment plan with you

at least you didnt ride in a an ambulance...that will usually double your bill

Sounds about right, I had three stitches in hand and it cost me nearly the same. My deductible is lower however.

Send whatever you can in a monthly payment. If all you can afford is $50 then send it. They will never file against you and yes I have done it. It works.

Oh, silly you! Don't you realize that you are also paying for the people who don't pay their bills?

This is very true. You don't even have to send $50. You can send $5. Just has to be regular payments on time.

Of course, if you show up to the same hospital and need anything else done, they'll probably deny you until you take care of the balance, but at least it won't go to collections.

Lesson learned? Don't go to the emergency room for sissy stitches. Go for actual emergencies.

See if you can get the carpenter who built the nightstand to pay your bills. Or maybe whoever did the flooring. They should be held liable.

J/K I am glad you have insurance. HSA like others have said for the future but just go ahead and pay the bill. You seem like a decent American.

2200 bucks is pretty average. Just pay your bill when you can. A little at a time.

The problem with healthcare today is that there is no longer a real true value for service rendered. Nobody knows what the value is anymore. Insurance only pays a certain amount per dollar of what Medicare/Medicaid pays. So hospitals inflate bills to make it look like they take a loss. People who want to pay cash are fricked.

Ask someone what the cash price would be and you will get a bunch of stammering. Most will take 40% off the top. But it is 40% off a bill that is outrageous.
