I've got it down to a 40 caliber...and I'm still deciding on the type. I'm pretty much down to the Storm, and the XD. I still am somewhat considering the M&P.

What's the boards opinion on the safety issue?

Most here don't know what one is.

I say yes to a safety because of unintended misuse possibilities.

Don't pull the trigger unless you are ready to fire. I have an M&P and love it. You can drop it while loaded and the firearm not go off. Whereas a lot of firearms with a safety can go off if not on safety and is dropped. I don't mind not having a safety on a pistol. On a rifle is a different story. I only have one rifle without a safety. It is a varmint rifle meant for bench rest only.

Possibly the single dumbest and most dangerous line I've read on any forum.

Doesn't bother me to not have one.

No safety (switch) on any of the handguns I carry.

Gekko,
From my personal experience, the XD is a fine self defense gun. I don't have any personal experience with the other two, although I've read favorable reports of both on the internet. I think your question is referring to an external safety lever as all self defense guns have safeties of some sort, even if they don't have an external safety lever. Re: the issue of external safety levers, my personal thoughts are:
Single action only guns, e.g. the 1911, should have an external safety lever as these guns typically have a lighter trigger pull (3-5#).
Striker type actions, e.g. Glock, don't necessarily need an external safety lever, as long as the shooter has adequate training and the trigger has not been modified for a trigger pull that is lighter than factory specs.
Double action only guns, e.g. Kel-Tec PF9 or the entire Kahr series, don't need an external safety lever.
DA/SA guns, e.g Beretta M92, get complicated w/ addtion of decocker levers and different combinations of the status of the action

The main thing is for the shooter to have a comfort level and adequate training for whatever pistol they choose for self defense. And yes, the most important safety feature on any gun is the one between your ears.

Very solid advice...

I think all three are great guns so it basically comes down to the safety feature for me.

I like the way the beretta feels in my hand better than the S&W, but I haven't held the XD in quite some time. I need to go and try to rent one at the range.

All safeties are external. If it's internal, it's not a safety. It's a lawsuit/massive award prevention device.

But this is gonna turn out like a lot of threads, in that you're gonna get so many different answers you'll leave more confused than when you started it.

This. I have an XD with the thumb safety. Alx and I got into a heated debate with some ODB'ers about this, but I have young children in the house and I want the added safety as an added defense against the unexpected happening. You don't have to agree with me, but I choose to have the added safety... But I also CC with an unchambered gun too!

Pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Also, most modern firearms have "drop safeties," so that if they are dropped, they don't immediately go off.

I think what he meant was "Don't put your finger on the trigger unless you are ready to fire."

If everyone followed this rule, there would be a lot less accidents.

Also, treat every gun like it's loaded (i.e. do not point it at anything you do not wish to kill or destroy, even if it's unloaded)

That stuff is all fine and good, but just because you follow it doesn't mean a lot. If I could guarantee my gun would never be touched by anyone but me, I'd agree with that line of thinking. I just know I cannot do that. If everyone was safe, there'd be no safeties on any guns.

Very true. And I am in no way against having a safety on a pistol, as long as it's big enough to manipulate in a stressful situation.

My last carry gun had a safety, and I was fine with it.

Now I carry an M&P which has a longer and heavier trigger pull, so I feel comfortable not having a safety.

Most revolvers don't have safeties(I can't think of any that have one). Why should some automatics have them?

I think S&W did it best by making the same gun with an option of a safety, and they made the safety big enough to manipulate in a stressful situation.
