Real Gas vs Ethanol Gas Prices

For those of you that have stations that sell both types of gas. What is the price difference in your area. Ethanol gas by me seems to continue dropping and the real stuff is staying the same. There is now a .50 per gallon difference! 2.99 for ethanol and 3.49 for real.

25-35 cents difference here in ascension.

5 to 10 cent per gallon difference here in my part of Virginia. Although yesterday, I saw one station selling pure gas for $2.99/gal and the other stations in the vicinity selling ethanol gas for $2.98/gal. I figured with the tropical storm in the gulf, prices would jump up again. Haven't been out today to see yet, though.

In Livingston, they are usually about the same.

Usually about $.10/gallon in Baton Rouge area -- but haven't filled boat since recent price drop began, so I don't know what it is right now.

Don't mean to hijack the thread... But, shore gas vs. marina gas? I happened to drive by the onshore gas station on Grand Isle (real gas only). Needed gas for the boat. Not even thinking, I put 87 octane in the boat. Question is, does that matter? Engine is a '94 200 Johnson Ocean Runner. Afterward I looked for specifications on what the engine called for but couldn't find it. Anybody know the answer to this? Sidebar question - what do marinas usually sell?

Bout .20 cents difference where I usually buy it. Not sure about with this truck, but in my old one my MPG's improved enough on straight gas to make up for the price difference.

It shouldn't hurt your motor to run on 87 octane. That's all I ever ran in any of my motors.

Taken from the FTC website
The Low-Down on High Octane Gasoline
Are you tempted to buy a high octane gasoline for your car because you want to improve its performance? If so, take note: the recommended gasoline for most cars is regular octane. In fact, in most cases, using a higher octane gasoline than your owner's manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit. It won't make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage or run cleaner. Your best bet: listen to your owner's manual.
The only time you might need to switch to a higher octane level is if your car engine knocks when you use the recommended fuel. This happens to a small percentage of cars.
Unless your engine is knocking, buying higher octane gasoline is a waste of money, too. Premium gas costs 15 to 20 cents per gallon more than regular. That can add up to $100 or more a year in extra costs. Studies indicate that altogether, drivers may be spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year for higher octane gas than they need.

High octane gasoline is for engines with high compression ratios. High octane gas is harder to detonate without spark. "Knocking" is when the fuel/air charge "diesels" or ignites just from the heat generated by the compressed gasses.

Winner.

What downshift said. High octane won't give you better gas mileage and will decrease horsepower if your ignition advance system can't take advantage of the higher octane.

I have always used medium grade (non ethanol) gas in my 2004 Avalanche. Is my truck going to explode?

Maybe if you're putting that 91 octane in your windshield washer resovoir.

I live very close to Kenner and the two stations near my house that sell ethanol free are about the same if not cheaper than the stations with ethanol.

Awesome. You will get better mileage from ethanol free gas.
