Syria shoots down fighter

And here we go
LINK

The loss of one of the Turkish Air Force's F-4 Phantom marked the most dangerous development yet in Syria's 15-month uprising and left Western powers scrambling over how to respond.

Turkey threatened to take "decisive" action last night after Syria shot down one of its fighter jets, sparking fears that Nato could be drawn into a major confrontation with the Assad regime.

NATO seems about as useless as the UN in its current form.

AUSCANNZUKUS plus Poland, Korea and Japan seems like a far more relevant and reliable mutual defense group.

You have Russian marines in Syria in the line of fire involving a NATO country. Nothing could go wrong there.

Was this F4 in Syrian territory when it was shot down or not? I can't find one way or the other.

It's not a big deal. Don't get all depressed over it. You've only got 121 posts. Be bold.

I can see this happening. Turkey attacks the missile batteries and airfields in Syria.
Russian soilders are killed.
Now you have a Russian / NATO standoff. This could get bad.

From the WSJ article ( LINK):

quote:

The Turkish and Syrian navies continued a joint search for the crew of the missing aircraft, an F-4 warplane, which Syria said fell into the Mediterranean Sea about six miles west of the Syrian village of Umm al-Tuyour.

Article 5 of the NATO treaty would not be triggered if Turkey attacks Syria, and isn't activated by this incident. It requires an attack on a Member in Europe or N America. Syria isn't in Europe.

Incidents in international waters/airspace adjacent to the treaty signatories don't apply? What if things ratchet up and it does spill over into Turkish territory?
