re: Toddy - care to condemn these photos/behavior?

just to clarify...reagan was evil because he didn't use his extensive knowledge of immunology to make a larger deal of a disease spread by people acting completely of their on volition?

or maybe i misunderstood and he forced US citizens to copulate with each other?

it's amazing the reality people can create to justify their actions

The population of the US in 1987 was 242,288,918. That means AIDS affected 0.01% of the US population. Clearly something that demanded Reagan speak out sooner.

I have never heard a President speak out about Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and that is something that affects ~0.03% of men and tends to be fatal by the affected persons early 20s.

If a radio host called Obama a monkey that is definitely poor taste and he should apologize.

Gonna take him a long time to apologize to all monkeys for the vicious comparison.

And, even if offensive to actual monkeys ... that aside, the radio host should be fired for being stupid.

He's done a lot for Ole Miss. I've heard that he when he was first invited to campus to speak, he was shunned by a lot of the journalism department because they don't consider FOX to be "true journalism".

I really don't have an opinion of him. I know his ex wife.

Following discovery of the first cases in 1981, it soon became clear a national health crisis was developing.

Is Aids a national health crisis? I have only known three people who have died from Aids. I have had more friends/family die from age and stupid stuff like driving while under the influence of Alcohol. That is even after the Aids infected community contaminated the US blood supply. Hateful people those Aids POS guys are. Now they want my support. Never going to happen.

Are you going to condemn the Republican radio host from Arizona that called Obama 'the first monkey President" last week?
I'm going to need context.

Did he say it as an overt racial pejorative, or was there a specific comparison he was making?

You do know you can compare a black guy, or any guy, to a monkey without it being racism. . .don't you?

re: Toddy - care to condemn these photos/behavior?

quote:

Reagan would ultimately address the issue of AIDS while president. His remarks came May 31, 1987

Then who was this guy impersonating Reagan at a press conference on September 14, 1985?

1985 ...

"President Ronald Reagan: Taking Questions

Q: Mr. President, the Nation's best-known AIDS scientist says the time has come now to boost existing research into what he called a minor moonshot program to attack this AIDS epidemic that has struck fear into the Nation's health workers and even its schoolchildren. Would you support a massive government research program against AIDS like the one that President Nixon launched against cancer?

The President: I have been supporting it for more than 4 years now. It's been one of the top priorities with us, and over the last 4 years, and including what we have in the budget for '86, it will amount to over a half a billion dollars that we have provided for research on AIDS in addition to what I'm sure other medical groups are doing. And we have $100 million in the budget this year; it'll be 126 million next year. So, this is a top priority with us. Yes, there's no question about the seriousness of this and the need to find an answer.

Q: If I could follow up, sir. The scientist who talked about this, who does work for the Government, is in the National Cancer Institute. He was referring to your program and the increase that you proposed as being not nearly enough at this stage to go forward and really attack the problem.

The President: I think with our budgetary constraints and all, it seems to me that $126 million in a single year for research has got to be something of a vital contribution.

Q: Mr. President, returning to something that Mike [Mike Putzel, Associated Press] said, if you had younger children, would you send them to a school with a child who had AIDS?

The President: I'm glad I'm not faced with that problem today. And I can well understand the plight of the parents and how they feel about it. I also have compassion, as I think we all do, for the child that has this and doesn't know and can't have it explained to him why somehow he is now an outcast and can no longer associate with his playmates and schoolmates. On the other hand, I can understand the problem with the parents. It is true that some medical sources had said that this cannot be communicated in any way other than the ones we already know and which would not involve a child being in the school. And yet medicine has not come forth unequivocally and said, ''This we know for a fact, that it is safe.'' And until they do, I think we just have to do the best we can with this problem. I can understand both sides of it. "

National Institute of Health has it on video (3rd one down):

If you call the President a "monkey", not once but twice on MSNBC as a guest, you know what will happen to you - Erin Burnett paid for her use of the word by getting her own show a few years later, which you can watch nightly on CNN.

"On MSNBC's "Morning Joe," back on Monday, Erin Burnett let loose with her real feelings and laid it on the line right on the air, calling President Bush a "monkey" during a business news piece about the Nicolas Sarkozy visit to China."

Watch it with your own eyes and hear it with your own ears here:

Clearly you don't remember the 1980's. AIDS lead evry nightly newscast...WE WERE ALL GOING TO DIE!!! Everyone was in danger! It was the #1 indiscriminate killer of that decade! It could happen to anyone. It was lurking in every middle class mom...we needed to donate tons of cash to save ourselves. And...clearly presidents needed to address it long before cancer, heart disease, etc.

There is still a lot of anger from this generation of how Reagan handled the AIDS crisis. (ie, waiting until 1986 before he even mentioned it)

Maybe Obama needs to speak out about Bugchasers.

The bigger question here is, why is the President hosting a gay pride reception at the WH?
