Snappers are amazing. I like collecting data on them almost as much as I enjoy eating them.
I now understand why they are so revered in other cultures.
May have to start my own small farm if turtle meat continues to average ~ $14/lb.

The secret isn't a certain place. It's a certain type of place. Nasty stagnant water, covered in duck weed or lillies. The more leeches the better. My turtles have been covered in leeches. Turtles also like water above 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
The bayou is gonna be too big. Too many other critters to steal your bait, water moves too fast, and water is too cold.
Find places the bayou splits off, like into a drainage ditch and fish the hole where the two meet.
I got some with this guy. He's a commercial fisherman and was helpful, to a point, in pointing me in the right direction.

btw, what is a 5 eye hook?

I decided to set a few lines this morning. The dam traps/nets are such a mess. Smell to high heaven when I pick them up and there is still bait.
Will let you know if I catch any. I've been so busy I've only been once this year.

quote:Decent size for a snapping turtle. Y'all are killing me. I had my bait cleaned out TWICE and had treble hooks, at that. Something is taking my bait.

W, what up??
Not much, haven't fished in over a week for them.
I did learn that these guys are more resilient than I thought - I've kept turtle #3 alive in a bucket during the last week or so.
I'm feeding him shad and letting him out in the bed of my truck to spray/wash him down almost daily.
I need to catch another one for a decent sized sauce piquant.

People look at me like I'm the biggest batshite crazy redneck when I tell them that turtle meat is one of the best tasting meats on the planet.

if using traps is the best way to do it and they are not very expensive i will try it.
I'd prefer learning more about setting the lines cause it's a mess handling the nets/bait. Smells the shite in the bed of my truck, for one thing.
I'm still learning and may focus more on lines in the future. I only invested in 4 nets @ $50.00 a piece. I can easily get $30.00 for them, IF I even sell them.
Hey W, shoot me an email if you get this. I may not get it til tomorrow but wanted to share something I don't want to post in the open for lurkers to snag.

I've found a few different flavors and consistencies.
Neck = fish.
Tail = tenderloin.
Legs = duck. Really dark.
Allegedly, I've read there are up to seven distinct flavors and textures.
Feel free to add others.

Don't do it. You're only going to grab the wrong end once.
Screw that.
No way in the world I'd mess with those things.
