eliminate helmets and shoulder pads, as there are no better tacklers than rugby players. when you MUST tackle properly to make a play, it's amazing how seldom people lead with the head.

I've been saying this for a long time. Players use their helmets as weapons. They had almost zero head injuries before because nobody led with their head.

frick those players. They knew it was a violent game and loved to play it their entire careers.

I just can't picture a world without football.

Yup.

NFL will never eliminate helmets IMO though due to how valuable the logos are. Imagine no Cowboy's star, Green Bay 'G', Saints Fluer-de-lis, etc.

We're talking mega-million dollar branding tools here.

Joe Paterno said this before he died.

I did not read the article. Pussification may continue to the point that we are watching some bastardized rugby hybrid.

Take helmets off football players and put them on boxers.

i know, i know...those helmets are the icons for the NFL even more than the NFL shield, but until we start playing football without them, then we'll continue to tackle in a manner which will create neck injuries and concussions. the precise reason i'm pushing baseball

Pretty much. Anyways, just pay them to shutup and have all future professionals sign a waiver case closed. No?

knowing what people know now about head injuries, think they are going to let their kids just sign up to play football?

I don't know where the "play without helmets and they won't get hurt as much" idea came from.

Back in the early 1900's so many college players were dying and getting seriously hurt that they almost banned the sport then. 24 guys died in 5 years and there weren't nearly as many teams. Imagine the reaction if 5 college guys a year died now.

Yeah. I love the American mentality. You get paid so much more than the average American to play a sport that you love (most do anyway). If that isn't enough you then sue the hand that gave you all that money for not "informing you of the dangers/risks of concussions."

I'm sorry, but if you failed to realize that a contact sport has a high risk of injury, then that isn't my problem. This is America though and we love to put the blame on someone other than ourselves and sue the frick out of them to take the easy road out.

If you don't want to deal with the risks of concussion, then don't play football and make millions of dollars. /endrant

it's all about proper tackling techniques. i don't recall a great deal of rugby players dying, because they do not lead with their heads. i'm not saying rugby players don't have collisions with cause concussions, but unless we instruct our players to tackle properly, we will continue to lose football players to concussions and neck injuries.

i understand that football will never be played without helmets, though, so...

My problem with the lawsuit stuff is this: almost all would have continued playing the sport regardless. Less than 1 percent have chosen not to sign up to play pro football this year and they have heard every horror story imaginable. I do think we have had our head in the sand but I hate these type of lawsuits more. And this is only the beginning of this stuff. There are tons of concussions in most sports. Most have just been undiagnosed/ignored unless severe. I guess the thing to be learned is that a kid at any age must not be allowed to return to a game when he has a concussion. Coaches all the way to the bottom levels will have to learn how to diagnose even minor ones and act accordingly.

Blame the dumbasses who lead with their head instead of their shoulder like they're supposed to. You're taught from little league on up (or at least I was) to NEVER lead with your head and to always wrap up.
