more than non musicians. What a shitty spot to be in. Been watching classic album documentaries and biographical docs about acts. frank zappa could not have had fans that didnt play an instrument. at the very least, if you didnt play before you heard it, if you enjoyed it, you probably started playing an instrument. watching a fishbone documentary now... same goes for these guys. insanely talented, dont fit into any genre, but almost zero commercial appeal despite every musician listing them as influences.

here are some of my favs that have almost no commercial appeal.

bad brains
fishbone
liquid tension experiment
racer x

You could probably put Dream Theater in that category, too. Most of my friends that like them are musicians.

They are successful in their own right, but I believe the OP was talking about commercial accessibility.

They're definitely too prog to be consider a "radio friendly" band (although, I have heard them on the radio occasionally on like Sunday nights or off hours)

while Bad Brains have no commercial appeal, you definitely dont have to be a musician to like them.

Most I know that like them have no musical talent... their first record ay be the most essential hardcore record...

i put liquid tension experiment, which is their instrumental sideproject. dream theater have a terrible image that follows them, but those guys sell out tours. i really like them, but i think their problem is that non musicians just dont know about them. granted 95% of their songs would neer appeal to normies, but how many songs do bands need to be popular? fuel has name recognition from two singles.

fishbone gets me everytime. have no understanding how they didnt make it big. 2 things come to mind: living colour took their spot as the black rock act, and they were black.

ya. its one of those bands that stays in your head because so many musicians list them as influences, not because they are on tour or promoting new works.

dream theater needs to start farming out their writing abilities to bands with female singers like evanescence, lacuna coil, dead sara... listen to this song and think about evanescence singing it, instant hit.

dream theater - forsaken.

Ive always considered Fishbone to be successful... maybe not mainstream, but thats really not an area I am generally in touch with...

I actually thought that the first time I heard lacuna coil, they definitely have the prog-aesthetic and still have had some commercial success.

I think Dream Theater's main problem is that James LaBrie is a very dated singer - too 80's for many folks, I think.

Dream Theater mainly appeals to nerds. That keeps some people from listening to them.

absolutely. but that rotund headed arse pigeonholed himself with those vocals.

take a band like symphony x which is WAYYYY farther into prog than dream theater. we are talking illiad and odyssey concept albums. their singer sounds great.

fair enough. seen alot of bands live. dream theater is album perfect and its cool to see them play that stuff so well and not make mistakes, but its a sideshow attraction in the end. you are almost waiting for them to mess up.

on the other hand, nobody whips a crowd into a frenzy like devil driver. complete atmosphere. i couldnt give a shite if they just learned to play the drums, that place is electric when they go on. dont care for their music, love their live shows.

To me, the ultimate musician's musician is Lou Reed. Dude makes people want to play.

As far as DT goes, I'm a huge fan from back in the day, and I see nothing wrong. Keep on procking!

Rush is rock musician's kind of band. Many of the lay say he sings like a girl, then pop in Whitney Houston or Lady Moron or whatever her name is.
