I found my kids' dog by the house Sunday and I thought he was dead. He wouldn't respond and was laying there with drool coming out of his mouth. His eyes were open, but he wasn't movning. After a while he lifted his head but still wouldn't walk. Later that evening he would sit up and eat and drink a little if you put it in front of him. There was nothing swollen and he doesn't seem to be in pain. Since Sunday he pretty much just lays around. He is still eating and drinking some, but is very lethargic. He barked for the first time last night. Any ideas?

ETA: He is a Beagle/Daschund mix.

If he is drinking and pissing that is a good sign. Have you been to the vet?

Sounds like it could possibly be Lyme disease. Look closely on his body for a small tick and burn it off if you have to. I really hate the response "take him to the vet" but obviously thats the only option here. Good luck.

Old dogs can catch it too! Best bet is to take it to a Vet. It is your responability as a pet owner to do this.

Just so I understand. On Sunday, you notice something is substantially wrong with your kid's pet dog. On Thursday, four days later, you ask for medical/veterinary help or advice from a bunch of sports fans on an internet message board...

Seizure? My dog has seizures but usually is only lethargic for less than an hour after.

Same for my Weiner dog. He's feeling better and moving around after about 30 minutes.

My beagle regularly has seizures (maybe a couple of times a month). She's going on 9 years old now. But as some others have said, she's usually back up and at em after half an hour or so.

She tenses up, can't control her limbs, then foams at the mouth, and eventually loses control of her...bodily functions. Then we keep petting her until she starts to relax, and her tail and legs "unstiffen" and give her a treat. It's really hard to watch, but can't do too much about it.

I'd keep an eye on your dog for seizures, because seizures are common among them.

Could he have eaten fertilizer or ant poison? Something like that happened to my brothers lab.

On heartworm prevention? Up to date on vaccines?
Do you have any plants, fertilizers, chemicals outside dog could have gotten into? Toxicity, seizures, and heat stroke would be my top thoughts with just what you have mentioned.

Same symptoms my wife's dog had a couple days back. Take the dog to the vet, but first see if you can find a tick. Our dog wasn't in any pain, and nothing was swollen, but had paralysis in her legs. Vet found a tick and said its an infection only found during the summer months

Yeah I know but I wasn't willing to take a stab with it being an older dog. Too many unknowns.

True! That is why DMV's go to school as long as a people doctor. You sure don't want a guy that works on AC's treating one of your kids, so take the dam dog to a Vet!
