Just finished the first season of The Wire. I honestly do not get the hype this show carries. Does it get better in later seasons?

I would give it a 6/10 as a season as a whole.

i think its a very solid show... but i think there are better shows. i made it halfway through season two, but got distracted.

i was let down because of all the hype built up about it on this site

that will kill anything and season 2 is different enough to break your concentration.

I agree completely. I found it less than thrilling at first. It did manage to hold my interest and finished pretty strong. But I was less than blown away. That said, I finished season 1 nearly a year ago and havent even opened season 2. I will one day.

I did like it but I'd say 7/10.

It's really a matter of hype, once you here some much about it, you pick apart any flaws you find. That said, The Wire can be hard to get into.

You should watch the entire show before you dismiss it. It's a 60 hour long movie

I loved the show. Season 4 was the best by far. Season 5 was complete crap. I really enjoyed the entire series. I really really liked Omar's character, and found myself always pulling for McNulty to do good instead of being a frick up.

ETA: I never heard any hype about this show other than it was good. Never got any spoilers and really didn't know crap about it until I watched it, so I went into it with a clear mind and no idea what to expect or should expect. Made it that much better.

just ignore me saying that it is BY FAR the best show ever made, and also the greatest literature of our era in any medium, and the most important American work of art of my lifetime, etc etc etc. That's all true, but I didnt know any of that before I watched it.

Just watch it. Forget the hype. Watch it and THINK about what it means. Watch with your BRAIN.

stopping after season one is like putting in just the tip, and saying "what is the big deal about sex"

eta: It also helps to know that the show is largely created by people who were actual cops, journalists, teachers etc in Baltimore. The shite on that show is real (with the exception of some aspects of season 5). Think of it as a documentary.

The Wire is an important American literary contribution uniquely portraying the dysfunctional human condition in Baltimore which likely at least in part explains inner city misery in general. However, it's definitely not for everyone. As I have mentioned before in similar threads, The Wire had mediocre ratings during its active run and won no major awards in spite for being heralded by some critics as the greatest TV series ever. Many potential viewers simply are not interesting in this genre/setting.

I think so. To me it seemed crammed up, and rushed. Like they obviously knew this was the last season, and they wanted to tie up all loose ends and make sure every possible storyline was tied up. It just didn't seem like there was any real story there besides the obvious, and even that was poo poo. Ever since they introduced the city hall, the whole show seemed to go way more politics and less police stuff.

It's okay. Some people prefer shows like 24, Heroes, and Dawson's Creek.
