With the Port of New Orleans being the major coffee port in the US (a coffee-centric friend told me something like 80 percent of the world's beans come through that port), New Orleans is probably one of the underrated coffee cities in the US.

Yet, for me, I know just the usual stuff like Cafe Du Monde, Community, P.J.'s, etc.

What other New Orleans (or Baton Rouge)-centric coffees should I try? I'm a big fan of Peet's right now, but that's a West Coast brand. I'm looking for something new that's more local.

Union and French market are a cut above the rest IMO.

What do you like about either of them?

I know I can get French Market at (I think) Fresh Market in BR (where I buy my Peet's). How about Union?

You can get French Market just about anywhere in BR. I'm not sure about Union, I've never bought it.

You will not find anything local that is better than Peet's, imo. I'm not sure why you suffer through the sludge that Louisianians call coffee in order to find something local that might be a few cuts below Peet's.

That's sort of what I'm trying to avoid. I'm happy drinking my Peet's, but I did have a nice local brand for a while (Hebert's, now out of business) that I added to the mix from time to time.

Peet's is better than Community. There's no doubt. I'll need to try Union. French Market is good, not great.

Gotcha

When I first moved here, I went on a binge trying all the local coffees available. I ended up throwing half bags of beans away. I've never heard of Union though, may have to pick some up.

My hometown and two of my favorite cities represented there. Portland is where I first had a cup of Peet's. Now I also make sure to stop off at the Peet's in the United Terminal at Bush.

Not New Orleans coffee, but here is a few of my favorites to get fresh beans from.

I don't mind Community but I got a big bag (whole beans) one day at Sams that, I swear, tasted like fricking Sanka or something. Was absolutely awful.

I was wondering if they were outsourcing for their Sam's stock...

I work for Farmer Bros. Coffee. We are the largest "whole-sale provider nationwide", but are not in the South Louisiana market due to Community's foot-hold and Luzianne Tea. We offer over 50 different grades of coffee. Some day we will be down home. GEAUX TIGERS!! Through Thick and Thin

I'll have to check them out. What kind of flavors do you recommend? I normally just drink medium roast, but I am not opposed to branching out and trying a cup of flavored joe here and there.

I am sure I am sure I will get the normal comments
from all of the coffee connoisseurs on the board(it sucks etc) It is a great smooth tasting coffee with
no bitter after taste. It is sold at Rouse's, Wal-Mart & Mathernes in BR. Or if you want to shoot me a message I will send samples with in reason
